Post subject:  Another AWD in CA

Whats up guys! i've been on this board for a while but rarely post. For those who dont know me. I too and joining the AWD club. Been busted my ass this week end to get the front end stuff finished. I have coppied and pasted everything over from another Forum, SDDSM.org Thought I would share my work with everyone!

Alright fella's! I got alot done today. Tomorrow I should finish the rest of the front end stuff. When I am done with this I will be able to slap on an AWD tranns and Xcase.

For starters I had to remove this cross member. Obviously it sits right in the way of where my Transfer case needs to go.

Image

Here is a pic of what the cross member looks like. Time to make some new motor mounts! My front mount, which I welded solid a little wihle back was actually broken. Awsome!

Image

This is what the rear mount braket looks like, it points straight down which would also get in the way of the Xcase. Luckily When mitsu made this bracket they did not offset the holes and made the flange flat. All I have to do it flip it upside down and that takes care of that. :)

Image

So now i have to make a new rear cross member to hold the rear of the motor up. I started out by grinding down all the paint and yucky stuff that might catch on fire while i'm welding.

Image

So I made some brackets, like these! to hold the side of the new cross member.

Image

Finally got the bracket welded onto the innder fender. Yeah, I burned a bunch of holes, and yeah, it looks like shit. But holly fruit and banana was it hard to weld in a spot that you only have 1 foot left to right, and have to stand on your tippy toes and hang your head upside down in order to get a good angle.

And the other side

Now I lay my new cross member in there, cut a little bit of the stock motor mount off and lined everything up to tack weld.

Image

Here is what my rear cross member ended up turning into, Not bad ehh?

Image

Lay it in, bolt it down. DONE!!!

Image

Tomorrow I will be doing the cront cross member. I can smell the awd already...

Okay just got done working on the colt, again. LONG day. all I did today was make the new front cross member. Heres what I had to work with. I had to connect the mount bracket to a mount, then connect the mount to a new cross member.

Image

I made a piece like this. This would work by its self if I was going to drive around like Grandma, But Since I dont I need to add a little extra support.

Image
Image

This is where the stock bracket for a tow hook would go. I removed mine a long time ago so I thought I would use it as another mounting point for more support.

Image

I cut a piece pf plate steel to shape

Image

Drilled some holes and test fit, Wala!

Image

Time to connect the plate steel to the first piece I made.

Image

There we go, BLING BLING!!!

Image

Oh snap! More bling!
Image

Bolt that puppy onto the car and Call it a day!

Next up, I'll be installing the rear subframe and rear end crap, But not untill early June. See you next time!

This weekend my rooommate and I were trying to get the front done but ran into a problem. When we mounted the 1g awd tranny in there it would hit the passengers side wheel well frame. We were trying to get the engine to sit in there close to flat but just can't do it. Have you run into this problem? Also we where using the 1.6 tranny mount. Just trying to find if anyone else has ran into this same problem.

Yes when i mocked mine up the engine was not sitting flat the tranny side was about a inch or so low. Going to have to modify that mount that bolt to the engine bay or drill the holes on the tranny mount lower.
