On vfaq.com I read an article about these supposed switchable transmissions and am wondering if anyone else had some info. Which rear end/ drive shaft/axle combo and hubs would work with these beasts. The tranny and trasfer case come off of 1990 jdm galant vr4's if that helps. By the way this is a turbo colt hatch im looking into installing this combo in. Thanks for any feedback in advance.
There were a few different JDM switchable trannies out there. Only ONE of them has the proper gear ratio to work with a US rear end. There is no rear end except MAYYYBE a rear-end from a Galant GSX that will work without getting something expensively imported from JDM-land. Hubs/front axles aren't any different. I've known people who have used these trannies in 1g AWD DSM's with success, and I've known people who've used them in CSM's, but they were only FWD and just let the output shaft spin freely.
There was just a post about this on the So-Cal DSM mailing list not too long ago where it tells you which trannies work and which don't. When I get home later I'll dig it up and get you that info.
