i imagine some of the cars here have to shift into 5th gear before reaching the quarter mile.

the cars are so light (unstable/twitchy steering at high speed), and most transmissions are deliberately notchy shifting into 5th, i'm wondering if things get a bit tense, with one hand on the steering wheel, trying to shift fast into 5th gear under full acceleration? thx.

Yes, Yes and Yes. Should do a in car cam of how you have to fight with the stering wheel from 1-3. You really have to be on your game in a colt, even with good susspension. My good friend brad runs 10's and is doing everything he can to keep form going to fifth , DSM trans, taller tires, etc etc. Doubt that will happen this year since his car should throw up some 9's by the end of the seasson. Once you do a swap or start running some real boost on one of these you have to be real respectful because they can get out of hand very quickly.

Trust me I have been crossed up shooting down the 1/4 doing everything I can to keep the car in my lane, the car is a handful even with suspension upgrades, slicks, and staged boost controller. :o

A friend nicknamed my car the "Type writer" because everytime I shift its like hitting the end key and the type writer zips back to the left from right side instantly ready to go again to the next sentence heading left again.

4th gear should take you WAY past 100mph, so you shouldn't need to shift into 5th gear. That is unless you're running smaller then stock tires.

I've also had it cruising down the track at 130mph. I didn't find it to be that unstable. The stupid windshield wipers were about to fly off though.

With my 22" tall slicks (about 2" shorter than stock) when crossing through the traps I am right at 6800 rpm in 4th gear at 123mph. With taller slicks, you could probably go 130 in 4th. Unless you're going faster than that, don't worry about 5th.

Also, I've tried my car at the strip with and without slicks. Allow me to summarize:
With slicks it's perfectly straight and drama-free.
With drag radials: Pray to god for your survival.

I was going to agree that 4th gear should take you to at least 125 mph if your going to red line. Some of us with the 1.6L's shift at 8K but I'm not fast enough to get to that RPM point in the 1/4.

Well I think that 4spd will fly! Top speed hmmm 130mph at 7000rpms I guess. Like I said I am guessing.

Im running it b/c I think it will be sweet at the track. 1st goes to 38 ish, 2nd goes to , no joke, 75mph, and third easily makes it to 110. So with the 400whp i will be running, it osuld be interesting. I'll relay how it performs.

I think the 4spd is a good choice too. As long as it doesn't dump you into an rpm level where you can't make boost. And, if it'll hold up to that much torque.

I see a broken tranny for you in the future- :( I have no expreience with the 4 speed tranny but at the 130 ranage you are into the low low 11's and perhaps high 10's be intresting to see how that tranny reacts, especially to the 1/8 mile.
