AHHHHHHHHHHHH! Dude, that's awesome! I love these things. I'm amazed the cam lobes haven't flattened out already.

Dodge Spirit RT. I used to have an '88 Shelby Daytona. Fun car. It's what got me hooked on turbo 4 bangers.

Someone switched two of the vacuum hoses, basically disabling the wastegate actuator. First test drive I was like, "Holy Bejesus!" It was the first time I've ever driven a Spirit R/T, but I knew it couldn't be that good.

I'm having a similar problem with my Volvo right now. I think the line going to the wastegate either has a massive leak, or broke somehow. It feels insanely fast at like 1/4 throttle.

I fixed it all up, and she feels like my Galant now  . I'm Jonesing for some 20+ psi these days. I wish I could find a used link for dirt cheap so I could push the limits of my winter car.

You know, it's funny you say that, because it happens to sound like hell up top. It clatters like, well, it clatters like a Chrysler 2.2L LOL

My question is about this dodge Is
It a joint venture car or solely made by one manufacturer.

Pretty sure it's all Dodge, but I heard the head is designed by an Italian car company.
Ps. The turbo is Garret.

It's all Dodge. The head was actually designed by Lotus. That particular DOHC engine was only used in two cars: The Spirit R/T and the Dodge Daytona IROC, and that was only for two years total, I believe.

*edit* - That engine may have also been used in some super rare examples of the famed TC Maserati (Maserati LeBaron)

Oops. My mistake. British, Italian... Same thing.

The thing about the cam lobes is a major problem with those engines. Apparently the stock valve springs are too stiff, and the cams are hollow, so the lobes flatten themselves out. There's really no fix for it, aside from installing softer valve springs, which is a MUST if it hasn't been done already. I *think* people sell re-grind cams for them, but not too sure. Forget buying a new set of cams for it, lol. A buddy of mine worked for Dodge back in the day, and just for fun, he looked up the price of that cylinder head from the dealer. The BARE casting was $4,000 in like 2001.

ahhh the spirit RT! I had that same code on a 86 woodpanel Chrysler lebaron convertible TURBO (John voight special) Turned out that the wastegate line had broken (old plastic crap lines) and someone tried to repair it with generic vaccum line. It leaked like a sieve and the other mechanics couldn't figure it out lol. Mr DSM mechanic myself went over to the old 8V turbo SOHC lebaron, grabbed my airblaster gun and shot some pressure down the main boost line that goes to the solenoids and crap, and back out to the wastegate, needless to say, there were leaks from three different spots, and the wastegate was barely able to open. A few zipties and some better lines and it was good to go ahaha.

But there is also a guy at in my area who has a maroon 91 caravan (originally a SOHC turbo 2.5L one) that had the Spirit RT cylinder head swapped onto it. He ran 23+ psi of boost and methanol injection and built internals with a GT30 (I think) He ran 12's in that van if I remember correctly with slicks. Pretty damn cool l in my mind!

and because of it, I will always remember the Spirit RT, and how rare that DOHC cylinder head is.
