so I am going to visit my parents on 3-10.. and last week the motor in there 2001 dodge intrepid 150k miles on it. (2.7 v6 blown head gasket and oil is badly milky)..took a crap on them and its not worth the money to get it fixed. (car is worth 2500 max with a new motor..shop quoted them 5-6k for repairs).. i know its high since my dad called the dealership and a brand new motor is only 1800..but im not sure if that is short block or long block... and I wont have time to swap it out while im up there.. so with that said I am gonna help them look for a new car when I get there.. they need something under 4k max..that will last 5-10 years (as my dad is 80 this year so wont be driving much longer). what medium sized car would you say would be there best bet? I was thinking 2000+ mirage or galant.. any input /other car suggestions are very welcome... as much as I love dodge i think its time they got something a lil more reasonable for them.. and I know the mitsu's are reliable if I can find a older couple selling there stock one. what do u all think? thanks much Steve |

I'd say find a Camry or Accord that fits their price. Even older ones seem to run forever. |

Galants and Diamantes both seem to have transmission issues. Then again I see a bunch of Hondas and Toyotas these days with transmission issues too, well the autos anyway. The 5g mirage seems to be a good car. We picked up one with 73k on it last summer for $2400 and it currently has 86k on it. Just changed the oil and replaced the front brake pads, that's it. Ours has the 1.5 but the 1.8's are good engines too. |

If I were to buy just a car for transportation and want it to last forever. I would buy 1 of 3 cars or all 3. 1. Toyota camry 91-01 2. Mercedes 300 T/D 80-85 3. Volvo 200 series 1980s In any order |

I would stay away from: Anything turbo-the for ecoboost vehicles are having bad issues Subaru-constant head gasket issues(and I own one) Volkswagen-only mechanics should own these(I do love my TDI's, own 2) Kia-They are not holding up in my area Timing belt vehicles My in-laws have a Altima and they love it. No real issues for it's life so far. 1998 and it now has over 150000 miles. So, Nissan, Toyota as most of there cars now have no timing belt. Ford Taurus are cheap and are good for around 200K Chevy Malibu's are good for 200K I am assuming you are looking for mid size, FWD and V6. |

+1 on ford Taurus! I loved my 89 ford Taurus wagon 3.0. I will buy another. I had no problems with it, the odo said 70k I think but it only went to 99k (5 instead of 6 number odo) so may have had 170k. It was a great car. Power everything (mirrors, windows seats) had A/c from factory. and the 90s ford Taurus shos OMG but its very rare to find the older ones auto |

The best car? A CSM duh....All awesomeness aside a honda or toyota from the nineties will be be the best bet. For me those have been the most reliable and seemingly well made cars ive owned. Dont get the earlier 1995-2000 corrollas though they had oiling problems in the ring drain holes of the pistons. Its well documented. But gosh the nicest accord you could afford would probably be great! |

I personally love 87-95 Mercedes 300E sedans. Absolutely stupid reliability, one of the safest cars on the road, get up to 30 on the hwy. They can be had for between 2k and 4k very easily and will go +300k miles without blinking. These are considered the last of the true Mercedes, over-engineered to the extreme. My 93 300E 2.8 has had the following replaced in it's entire 22 year/186k mile life: Alternator (Once, just 2 months ago) Battery (4 times) Serpentine belt tension components (2 months ago) Tires and oil changes That is it. They use a timing chain and not a belt, still ice cold air. |

I vote Camry, I daily my xB which is basically a Camry wagon, mototr is 2AZFE. They are great all around reliable cars in my experience. |

Accord/Camry/Altima are my choices. I wouldn't buy anything "American" made for a midsize car. They simply aren't made to last like the Japanese cars. |

If they don't care about a truck/van I loved my 00 awd astro it had the vortec 4.3 which is a proven motor even by its v8 bi brothers. Timing chain slipped around 200k so replaced it and tranny weny around 180k so had it rebuilt but van was LOADED and the other co worker I let drive it beat on it. Got it at like 150k with tranny hesitation and finally stuck in first around 180k but the 4l60e in mine or other popular and similar trannys the 4l60 and R700 whatever year (80s-00s) transmission are good for around 200k used for work. You can probably get more out of a passenger or non work vehicle depending on its load. |

thanks for everyone's replies.. as much as I dont care for some of these cars I think my parents would like them... found a few camry's for a good price i just hope they are still available when I get up there next week. if not ill keep searching... also found a 95 expo with 145k on it.. not sure how long they last..but its been on cl on and off now for about 6 months or more.. and it doesnt list the engine size.. so again thanks for all the suggestions.. but my dad being as stubborn as he is got pissed off today cause they dont have a car and went to the dealership and bought a 2013 dodge dart turbo with 20k miles on it.. as much as I like these cars they spent 15k on it (instead of the 3500-5k i was trying to find a car for them for)... so now they have a car payment they cant afford. and higher ins rates... the only positive I can see is that when I get there next week the title will be put in all 3 of our names so if something happens to them I get the car..which will keep it out of my sisters hands.. anyways thanks again for all the suggestions. Steve |
