Have you used the Tamron 70-300 specifically? It's not exactly a cheap lens at $650-700, probably mid-range? For comparisons sake it's around $200 more than I paid for my 17-50. Everything i've read so far on the net seems to say it's a good lens, definitely on par with the non-L 70-300. I'll definitely keep reading though, and might see if I can possibly try both lenses out at some stage before I commit to buying either of them. Thanks for your help so far! :)

And since there are too many words in this thread and not enough action... here are a few shots from last weekend.

I haven't used the Tamron 70-300 specifically. I used a Tamron 28-300 back in the day, and it was a pile of garbage. It was so bad, that I was very reluctant to purchase the Tamron 17-50 that I love so much today. If the reviews on it are solid, and you've seen sample images that look nice, then there probably isn't a whole lot of risk involved in picking one up. The nice thing about lenses, is if you aren't happy with them, you can always sell them and basically make all your money back.

Another suggestion for a decent telephoto is the old-school EF 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. This thing dates back to the early 90's, and it was one of the first Canon lenses with USM, so focusing is quiet, quick, and fairly accurate. You can usually find them cheap. I have one, I paid $200 for it, and it fits all my telephoto needs. Of course, I wish it was faster, and I wish it had IS, but for the money, it's pretty damn good!

I just took this shot using that lens last weekend. I will be posting a full thread about this car soon, so here's a little teaser...

Okay, I gotta know...

How do you photo weenies keep track of what lense, ISO, zoom, flash, shutter speed, color aspect ratio, flux capicitor rating or whatever? Is it automatically saved with whatever camera you are using or do you just KNOW?

It's a KE70 wagon with an SR20DE+T in it. The driver is nuts, amazing to watch, such a ruthless style.
Here's another pic (not one of mine). This was taken on 'the sweeper' at Pukekohe Raceway here in NZ. Advertised as the fastest drift corner in the world, and the scariest part is the wall runs alongside the track, so if you do run off, you're gonna hit it. You also must enter at 180kph+ (110mph) otherwise you won't be able to hold the slide all the way round.

Wow, such a sharp photo, and a beautiful example of a VR-4.

Yeah I remember you telling me about your 70-210 back when I was shopping around for my first telephoto. If it had IS i'd definitely consider it, and if I can find one cheap enough i'll probably pick it up anyway, i've seen some go for around the $150 mark which is similar to what I paid for the 55-250.

I think i'll go for the Tamron 70-300 for now. Like you said, if i'm not happy with it I can always resell and pick up something else. Will aim to grab one before our next event (in about a month or so), so i'll give you my opinion on it then.

The B&W definitely do that POS justice. I don't care what is under the hood, that is truly a crap-can.

 That's how he rolls though. The car has character. Every dent tells a story haha. Old school or nothing, you'd never catch him owning anything made post 1990. As much of a POS as it is, everyone who watches it move falls in love with it. The way the arse end swings out, the near 90 degree lock on the front wheels, the angle he holds with it and just as it looks like it's about to spin out, he brings it back around. All fabrication has been done by him, the modified steering knuckles, suspension, the rollcage, the motor setup. The motor is nothing spectacular, but the way the whole car is set up is amazing. He's competing in the national drift championship in it this year, hence the big D1NZ windscreen banner etc. This car represents the heart and soul of drifting, you don't need a big widebody S15 with flashy paint and a silly LS1 swap. Home built is where it's at! 8)

I understand all that. But still I hate that car. I like this more than I like that:

Haha fair enough man. Personally I don't like V8 powered drifters. The massive torque kinda seems to take the fun and skill out of it. I like seeing aggressive technique based drift initiations rather than just 'floor it' and effortlessly break into a slide. Different strokes for different folks though for sure!

But enough of that, back to the photography! Here's a shot I took the other day. Out in rural NZ, I took this at about 5pm on a windy old road somewhere deep in the countryside. Something about this place gave me the heeby jeebys, I hadn't seen any other people/cars in about 15 minutes, there were old abandoned sheds all over the place, thick fog, the air felt quite sticky and wet. Overgrown grass, and moss all over the road, i'd say not alot of people come down here at all. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera on me so I had to use my phone... doesn't really capture the creepy feel of the place... but you get the picture.
