Another suggestion for a decent telephoto is the old-school EF 70-210mm f/3.5-4.5 USM. This thing dates back to the early 90's, and it was one of the first Canon lenses with USM, so focusing is quiet, quick, and fairly accurate. You can usually find them cheap. I have one, I paid $200 for it, and it fits all my telephoto needs. Of course, I wish it was faster, and I wish it had IS, but for the money, it's pretty damn good!
I just took this shot using that lens last weekend. I will be posting a full thread about this car soon, so here's a little teaser...

Wow, such a sharp photo, and a beautiful example of a VR-4.
Yeah I remember you telling me about your 70-210 back when I was shopping around for my first telephoto. If it had IS i'd definitely consider it, and if I can find one cheap enough i'll probably pick it up anyway, i've seen some go for around the $150 mark which is similar to what I paid for the 55-250.
I think i'll go for the Tamron 70-300 for now. Like you said, if i'm not happy with it I can always resell and pick up something else. Will aim to grab one before our next event (in about a month or so), so i'll give you my opinion on it then.
