It's like cars I guess. You learn by doing, and by reading shit and talking to people.

I was extremely generous with myself this holiday season, and I picked up a brand, spankin-new 5D mk2, along with a Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 lens and some other goodies (battery grip, etc.) I am super excited! I shouldn't need a new camera for a very, very long time. The next big purchase will be a Canon 35mm f/1.4L lens, because it's absolutely freaking amazing. The 24-70 will just be for landscapes and general walkaround stuff.

I saw something on FB with this thing. If Tony would shoot something I liked, I would buy it.

Just curious, but what does a set up like that cost?

The camera body itself is $2,000, and that's a cheap price. When they first came out (back in 2009) they were like $2,700 for the body only. The lens I picked up used on eBay for about $450 shipped, which is on the cheaper side. Sigma is a third-party brand, so it's a way cheaper option. If you had the pocketbook for it, you could spend WAY more on lenses. The next lens I'm looking at purchasing; for instance, is ~$1,300. I also spent about $300 in additional accessories for the camera to kind of customize it. Definitely a big purchase, but hopefully it will pay for itself soon enough.

Yea I kinda knew it was a little pricey and then add a few lenses to it then it gets crazy expensive. Cool deal, keep the awesome photos coming.

Geez what a fancy guy!! :D Nice one man!
How do you rate the 24-70 against your 17-50?

So far I am not very happy with the 24-70. I had to get rid of the 17-50, since it will only work with crop sensor cameras, and I am totally missing it. The 24-70 seems soft, and isn't very contrasty and doesn't produce very vibrant colors. I need to use it more, but it is likely that I will end up selling it. :(

Thanks! I've noticed, that car in particular is insanely hard to photograph when he's gunning it because of how crazily it swings (longish car, reasonably short wheelbase, rear weighs nothing). Almost all my panning shots of it end up blurred because I can track the car as it moves sideways but I can't track the way it violently rotates at the same time... if that makes sense  But for most of the other cars i'm getting quite comfortable shooting at 1/60th and still getting what I want in focus (photo #8 and #9) whereas in the past most of my shots taken at shutter speeds slower than 1/100 were kinda crappy.

Drifting shots are super tricky. I've only tried photographing a drifting event once, and I only got one pic that I really liked.

Nice. Man that's sharp! Damn tidy drift car too, don't really get much of that here in NZ.. as you can see in my pics above most of our cars feature battle damage, cable-tied bits, missing panels/lights/bumpers

Drift sluts! I like that look a lot. This S15 was definitely the nicest out of any of the cars that were competing at that event. Here's an example of one of the other cars:

This didn't have a Rotary in it, either. ;)
