The rear end is from a Turbo coupe with the correct 3.73 gears. A solid axle in a straight line launch is always going to out perform a independent set-up. But that does not mean IRS does not have it's place for a road race car or something.

As always we will be at the ECONOLODGE in the room by the pool relaxing from the ever so long 45 minute drive out there. Hopefully we will have large quantities of trailer park punch :drinkers: :drinkers: :drinkers: .

OMG!!!!! the shootout is 5 months away!! I got to make a post!

OH crap, I am so sorry. Yeah 3.54 OMG that was so long ago I had to hunt that down. Thanks for the correction...

The axle came from a manual trans 87-88 Thunderbird turbo coupe. The gear ratio is advertised as a 3.55. Mitsu advertises theres as a 3.545 and Ford just rounds up. Kinda like how a 302 becomes a 5liter..LOL. But anyway the gear tooth count is the same in both gear sets.
39 on the ring and 11 on the pinion..

The axle however is to wide to fit into a Colt and has the wrong bolt pattern as the car uses that goofy 4X108mm bolt pattern so after a little measuring I decided to have the axles shortened 3/4 of a inch on each side. Low and behold that is a mustang axle shaft. SO it has Mustang axleshafts with the 4X4.5 bolt pattern and 12mm studs installed.

Ok update time... Sorry I did not update friday, but the shop was so dirty I just could not bare to take any pictures.

OK, wear to begin

Image

This is a picture of the completed rear susp. I love the way it came out and think it will work very well.

Image

another angle

Image

this is the top side wear the fuel cells will sit. The plate in the center wear all the holes are drilled is wear the bulkhead fittings will mount.

Image

I started to do the rear floor. What a PITA!!!

Image

This is the part of the floor that will cover up the fuel cells. I know it is big, but the image of my burning to death wrecking the car and fuel spilling all over the interior just scares me. So a firewall was in order.

Image

This is what the firewall/floor board looks like installed

Image

And with the hatch closed I think it looks pretty good. Still need to make access doors to put fuel in. I found them at summit for 39$ but need to make sure they will work.

Image

This is the inside of it. I am planning on making a look alike rear seat cushion over this, but thats a while down the road still

Image

A better shot of it.

Image

After welding it in I sealed it up with a silicone based sealer that is unaffected by chemicals (according to the tube anyway)

Image

Image

This is the back end of the car also sealed up, I still need to drill two holes in there to get access to the bumper bolts.

Image

I added a diagnal bar to the cage, but it did not come out as nice as I had hoped. It is hard to explain why, so I won't try. Ask me in person and I will gladly show you. WIll work just fine though.

Image

Got a little crazy with the sawz-all and decided to remove the upper core support. Have some cool ideas for up here (more to come on this).

Image

Got the dash cut up to fit in. Glad I was thinking ahead. I used the old dash to make test fits and such and cut right through the vin area.. Police might not like that. So I cut this one a little differant. Should look pretty nice. The bottom of the dash needed no modification in anyway.

Image

This is my alternator relocation kit. I have no idea if it will clear the rack or sway bar. Have not tried to put the motor up into place.

Image

Here is one with it sitting on the ground with it's wheels and tires

Looks so good. This car had better be done in time for the shootout!
