I'm trying to buy a bumper cover from Thomcasey in this thread. http://www.4g61t.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=39155
The shipping quotes are just ridiculous and it just seems like I'm not doing something right. Shipping engines and transmission all around to places like Jacks Trans, Shep etc doesn't cost that much so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong when getting quotes.

Thom says the box is 67x29x17 inches and weighs roughly 25-30lbs and it's going from Indianapolis to Tacoma. UPS standard ground was about $288. I called UPS and FedEx freight to see if I could send it freight and just pick it up at the depot instead of delivery. UPS freight was $978 and FedEx freight was $533. :vom: I could buy a plane ticket and carry the son of a bitch back home for those prices. WTF!?

Yeah, I saw that mentioned online while searching. It looks like the cheapest I can find through normal shipping methods is $250-280. A quick quote from Greyhound online shows $84. hmmm I wonder if I they're trustworthy or if I'll get a box of smashed monkey nuts instead. Decisions decisions. haha

Are you getting the metal reinforcement too? If not the urethane bumper cover only shouldn't weigh more than 10 lbs. I'd just wrap it in shrink-wrap and toss a label on it. It also depends on who measures it at the place where you ship it. If they only measure the width of the bumper it'll be a lot cheaper, if they count the ends of the bumper as the total width it'll be more. I've also heard of some companies fold them in half and then you just sit them out in the sun for a day or two once you get it and let it return to its normal shape. This doesn't work on all bumpers though so it's risky.

The bumper alone is 18lbs. I estimated the added cardboard and bubblewrap. The weight is notthe issue, it is the measurments. The 1ga bumper will not fold. If you order a new one they cost $130 for shipping alone, justnot sure of the freight companies they use.

Wow, that's a heavy bumper cover. Then again I guess I'm used to the csm parts which are smaller and lighter. I didn't think the dsm cover would bend the way its made but figured it was worth mentioning. I will say the one and only time I ever used greyhound was a nightmare so I'd steer clear of them but then again maybe it was a one time deal.

If Fedex and UPS are pretty local maybe just take it by there before you even bother to wrap it up along with the zip and get some estimates in person. Sometimes I've gotten estimates online and it was actually cheaper once I got there. Also again, it really depends on how the person working there measures it.
