Post subject:  SPEC clutch broken

Hey

I picked up a stage 3 for a fwd talon 91 last year. I drove car for about 1200km in city along with drag runs and dyno pulls. After having a problem with tranny I went a head and see why clutch was not working. After having car on host to do a timing bely just along with upgrades I went ahead to have my tranny built. After pulling out the tranny this is what I found of left of my spec clutch (PICS)

That sucks man. I also have a spec clutch in the colt, I did have the springs in the disk come out and do some damage:

After I shipped it back to them for them to decide if it was covered by warranty they called back and left a voice mail, it was not covered. A few days later when I got back to town, I returned the call, argued on the phone for a few minutes then told them I wanted it shipped back to me (in Canada). I said I would take the springs out and weld the center pieces together, since I do still own a clutch. The next day I received another call, they admitted there was a fault in the design, the metal was too soft and too thin. I got a new clutch on warranty.

That clutch never made a dyno pull, no runs at the drag strip. There was about 6 tanks of fuel burnt with that clutch. The replacement is much better, no problems yet with it. After this experience I dont think I would get a spec again, we are not the only ones with problems with spec.

Good luck.

i had a stage 3 spec, that had issues from day one. it would slip on anythingmore then 1/2 pedal, and this was n/a!

i had to have it removed, sent back to sec, so they could make sure it wasnt install error. they admitted fault, and sent me a replacement. and once again, right off the bat, problems. car was not even drivable... i couldnt believe this shit!

after that, i gave up on spec all together. ive ran act's, clutchmasters, centerforce, tons of clutch's, AND NEVER ONCE A FAILURE! ive never even killed a stock OEM clutch on a car. yet two of these piece of shit SPECS couldnt even handle being babied through a break in period.

i bought a southbend DXD afterwords, and the clutch is still in the car after 6 years, and havent had one problem at all.

YOU COULDNT PAY ME TO INSTALL A SPEC IN ONE OF MY OWN CAR'S!

My friend has gone through two Spec's before he switched. This was in a lightly modified Nissan NX2000. About 350whp. And it was one of their "stage three" clutches. Pure junk. I would also not run anything except ACT. Or if I had the money, Tilton, or Ogura.

Well Im sure they knew if you put that back in there that it could be very dangerous. That peice could become a projectile and potentially kill someone.

Yeah, I wasn't about to put it back in the car. I just wanted it to hang on the wall of broken parts. I seen a what happens when a flywheel blows up on a dsm below 2000 rpm, pieces hit the hood and firewall. I couldn't imagine that happening over 6000 rpm.

I had a SPEC clutch on my SHO, it was in for about a month and after 500 miles the pressure plate snapped just like yours. I tried to get them to replace it under warranty but I had to send the busted one in first, which meant I needed a new clutch first. Long story short I got screwed out of the warranty and haven't supported SPEC since.
