What thread size is the oil drain plug on 4G15 and 4G6x? Would a coolant temp sensor fit? I plan on putting a coolant temp sensor in there instead of the oil drain plug and wire it to the gauge cluster via a switch. So I can switch between oilt temp and coolant temp.
Nifty, eh?

I dont know the correct metric name for it, but the coolant sensor is a pipe thread (tapers bigger). Not a good idea to install in, especially in a thin sheet metal. Instead, why dont you center drill and tap a coolant drain bolt to be 1/8NPT? They you could have a tru seal via the crush washer into the sheetmetal, and still have the correct threads for a temp sensor?

What is a coolant drain bolt? The butterfly screw on the radiator?

Edit: Dumb question again, I couldn't find any info what exactly a NPT thread is. Aren't those threads designated like "NPT1/8 x 27" or something? Oh, and what thread has the temp sensor? Questions, questions... :P

That should have read oil drain bolt. Center drill the oil drain bolt to fit a standard temp gauge sending unit. In the US our threads are NPT 1/8-27 which should be small enough to fit in the center of the OIL drain plug. The metric "almost equivelant" is what the coolant sending unit is. No idea what the exact name is, but it is a tapered thread. On a side note, I was once told not to use teflon tape on sending units because most of them use the threads as a ground. I havent run into problems with this, but seemed logical.

Sorry to confuse you.

Chris

No problem, I'm still confused. :-? It's because I could just use some rest from work.

But isn't the oil drain plug a bit smaller then the coolant temp sensor? OTOH, that temp sensor is really HUGE, I thing one can just cut a new thread into the actual sensing part of it... :o

There are spare access holes in the oil filter housing. See if any of those are easy to get to for you. I tried to use one, but couldn't get the bolt out. :(

Okay, then I gotta crawl under the car... but not in the near future. It's just freezing outside. *shudder*

Edit: Is the 4G15 oil filter housing identical to the 4G6x one? I remember some website where a 4G64 filter housing was modded to get an oil feed for the turbo. So I could start using that as a guide.
