It wouldn't surprise me if this topic gets locked within 2 days, but here goes...

What do their names mean? I have no clue what a .50 trim T3/T4 hybrid indicates but I am willing to learn. :)

A 50 trim hybird T3/T4 could include quit a few combinations. The 50 trim would be the size of compressor wheel which whould usually indicate a T4 cold side. Then the tubine side would be a T3, but there a wake of opions for that as well. Standard, stage 2 and stage 3 wheels as well as different A/R tubine housings .36, .48, .63 and .82. Here is a link to look throuhg a bunch of options. http://64.225.76.178/catalog/Default.htm Hope that helps you out.

the bigger the number, the bigger the turbo :-D

but yeah the biggest you ever really want on a street driven 2 liter is a t3 (turbine housing)/T4 (compressor housing) 50 trim (compressor wheel) stage III (turbine wheel) with a .63 A/R. I hope for gods sake that you know what the A/R is :D anyways thats a "T3/T4 50 trim stage 3 with .63 A/R"
if you dont, go get "maximum boost" by corky bell... n00b! :P

:o Whether you are familiar with these terms or not, "Maximum Boost" by Corky Bell is a great theory reference. Good reading for all.

on the topic of a/r, does anyone know what the 11b, 14b, 16g, etc... turbine and compressor a/r's are?? the only thing i know is that mitsu measures the area of the inlet... i guess i could measure it eh?

phil

No, Mitsu actually measures the A/R in metric terms. 7cm is close to a .48, 8cm close to a .63 ect.

Um, no I don't...

I'm guessing T2/T3/T4 and Stage I/II/III are just numbers with no finite meaning, but what about .50 trim? Is that a ratio or what? Ditto for the A/R ratio.

Enlighten me, please! :)

Maybe this will help:
A/R (area/radius) ratio is a method of fine tuning between basic sizes. Imagine the turbine housing as a cone wrapped around a shaft to look like a snail. Unwrap this cone and cut off a small tip for the discharge area. The area of this hole is the "A" (area) [The "R"(radius) is the distance from the center of the hole to the center of the turbine shaft... difficult to show by words.] A smaller R will impart a higher rotating speed to the turbine; a larger R will give greater torque. A simplified summary: a larger A/R goes to more power while a lower A/R goes to better low-speed response. It is really more theoretically involved. Read "Maximum Boost" p. 32

The Garrett Trim numbers for compressor wheels are not always higher number = bigger wheel/more flow.
the trim numbers come from an equation of the inducer and exducer measurements, I can't remember what the formula was now, but I think it was something along the lines of the trim being related to the difference between inducer and exducer measurements.
But the bigger number = bigger wheel is pretty much true within any range/series of wheels (ie T4), you will notice that the GT wheels have smaller trim numbers than the comparable T4 wheel (with similar flow numbers).

I have a garett t3/t4 (to4e) 57 trim with a .63 AR and stage III exhaust that i was going to be putting in one of my XR4TIs if anyone is interested in seeing pics of one ...

Before I put it on the car though it will get swapped to a 50trim as the 50 trim has a much better compressor map and larger efficiency range.

is the NPR IC I will be using as well ;) i put it infront of my 84 colt for a laugh
