I always wonder if a mile high isn't as big a handicap as people aways claim when you have a cranked up turbo car. I don't buy the 25 percent loss when you have the car tuned for high altitude running high boost. I wouldn't be surprised if you took the same car to florida in the summer and went slower. Greg

He has actually ran a 14.7,on the brakes trying not to break out but you also have to consider the elevation at the track is 5,900 ft...try losing 25% of your hp, then see how fast your car is. Stock EVO's and STI's are in the mid 14's up here and thats if the driver is good. Its the one thing I hate about living here...other than that I love the state.

He is actually still running rich so fuel isn't the proplem, not when we lack oxygen.
Wouldnt the turbo cure tha problams for ya at high ALT?????????
it did... 2 years ago.

 You guys just find this thread...Do some research before you post..Huh that's weird when shep or the other guys come to town they run slower oh but that has nothing to do with the elavation....I would say come run up at 5900ft and see for your self but we both know that would never happen...How come turbo's spool faster at lower elavation???Come on think about it...Oh and if you had a good tune here and took it to florida you bet it would be slower because you would be picking up parts down the track soon as you got on it..(less air equal less fuel more air equals more fuel)

Davis

Yeah you should make less power at higher elevation but the drop off isn't going to be nearly as bad with a turbo car compared to a NA car. The compressor makes up the efficiency loss in terms of pressure/flow but yes it does make the compressor less efficient, so you won't make as much power, but its not nearly as bad as most CO guys make it out to be. All I here from the CO guys is how fast their turbo cars are for the modifications they have, and then they try and make fun of the guys down at sealevel because they think the denser air at sealevel is such a huge advantage. Obviously it is an advantage but I think its taken out of proportion by a majority of the higher elevation guys.

Like Davis said, come up here and see for your self. I have personally lost .7 seconds racing in texas, and .9 seconds racing in virginia. Changing nothing in my old talon. We just got our first 10 second pass out of a dsm a few weeks ago. And this car is running a FP3575 near 40psi. Very well built, tuned and driven. We lose a lot, not as much as the N/A guys, but still a huge factor. Stephen Papadakis has never run faster than a 6.9 second pass here. He runs 6.40's and 6.50's everywhere else.

You tell me.

Steven

wow, holy old thread revived...but it is true that there is still a significant loss. Anytime you remove 30% of the oxygen from the air your gonna lose a lot of power. Since the start of this post I've actually done some compairing and found it to be closer to 15-18 % loss for turbo cars. But thats just peak power...the biggest deference was spool time and power under the curve drops much quicker after the peak.
