So when my buddy and I were on our short vacation in his '90 4G61 N/A Colt last weekend, the tach needle behaved strange. Sometimes, when the engine speed was below ~1100 revs, the tach needle just dropped to 0 or almost 0. But the engine speed didn't change. Otherwise the tach works great. What is this? |

Sorry for the tag along Eth, but I have the same problem with my needle right now. It would stay precise when accelerating and decelerating but is not accurate at the bottom end. I only have the "it's too high" idle sound and the wicked low vibe from the "it's too stressed at idle" feeling, to go by when checking for low idle speed performance. I think we both have the same question. (I have the 4G15 12V though..) Capacitor on the distributor or something like the connection at the coil too weak? hmmmm |

sorry to latch onto this thread with nothing else to add on, my tach does the opposite. when i am going along the motorway, i sit at about 3,500 RPM and sometimes the tach jumps up to 6,000 and higher, with no change in actual RPM, its odd yes? |

Maybe the mechanical parts just need to get oiled a bit? *scratches head* |

I believe in all three cases the tach is signaled directly from the distributor, correct? Since the engines all operate properly while the tachs are faltering, I'd have to bet that the problem is in the tach electronics or, less likely, in the wiring. |

*scratches head and wonders how much a -=good=- new stock tach would cost* if even available - girlfriend suspects the car will get tweaks before I get another job .... what to do? |

I somehow have the impression some grounding stuff or an old capacitor is the cause of such misbehaviour...? |
