I found a coil from a 2.0 Turbo Saab. It seems to work nicely for this mod and my idle is alot cleaner and fuel mileage increased greatly.

I found this to be the best place for the coil as I wanted to keep it away from any fuel source. I just fished some zip ties through the holes and they have been working great. Use some wire loom to clean up your wiring job and keep it looking professional.

I left the old coil and coil wire in place in case of an emergency and the new coil failed. Do not cut the plug on your old coil. Find yourself a new one. The coils are labeled + & - so this will make the job easier when it comes to wiring.

Notice that the old coil wire is still there (red). I just found a longer one (yellow) to run to the new coil. And thats that. Any questions just post here and I'll be glad to help.

So you're using a Saab turbo coil on your 4G15? :o Could you paint some schematic of what wire goes where and stuff? I'm greatly interested in this mod. Do other coils work, too?

Edit: I found out the 2.3L Saab Turbo engine uses 0.039" (1 mm) spark plug gap. Not bad for a turbo engine. The 2.0, though, uses still 0.028". Also, the '97 900 makes 190 HP.
Maybe this new coil is finally an inexpensive yet working ignition system upgrade. How much did mileage improve?

mileage went from about 20 to 30mph. I will set up a link to my webshots page and you can check out the schematics there. The saab coil was labeled + & -. The factory 4g15 ciol is labeled also. Follow the wires through the plug and into the new coil. My gas mileage sucked to begin with, but this was a life saver to the pocket book. You could even use an excell aftermarket coil for a v-8 I suppose.

well a boosted car nees more spark to get thru the compressed air, so i can imagine it working quite well on a N/a Car..you could prolly widen the sparkplug gap too a little, which would make starting the car easier and burn more cleanly...

Yes, you could probably run more gap. But what would it gain? Likely nothing, maybe even a decrease in mileage. Spark gap is a science, one has to do serious assumptions and then emperically find out if those were right or not - it's called research. :wink:

I am guessing that you are talking about the 8 valve 4g15, because i have the newer colt (92) and i cannot find a stand alone ignition coil to upgrade anywhere in the engine bay. Is there an ignition coil on the 92 engines, and if so where? I do know the older 4g15 because my dad has an 89 excel and yes there is a definite coil on that.

Any help with this matter is apreciated.

The coil is inside the distributor...

So if the coil is insie the distributor is there anything I can do to upgrade it > or do i have to go about enhancing the spark in other ways?

You can convert to an external coil. MSD makes a conversion kit. All you do is drill a hole in the distributor cap and screw in the adapter.

My browser said that the link is no longer available is there any other way to get this info, and when I went to msd.com they said the conversion kit is unavailable any ideas would be awesome this site :rock: :supz: :prayer:
