I don't know if the correct term is strut or shock. I went shopping for rear struts a few years back. I was told they were shocks. I even called KYB technical support because I thought I might be ordering the wrong part. They said the 89 colt hatch has rear shocks. The person I talked to said it had to do with how the lower end was mounted. I brought up the spring mounting and was told no they are shocks. Greg

makes me scared on where thes people got their training from :-?

If your using the term "strut" then you are in general referring to a "MacPherson Strut". From my knowledge the CB Lancer/Colt has struts up the front and torsion beam rear end and are therefore not "struts". There is more to the definition of a strut than just whether the spring is coil-over or not.

they are technically macpherson struts, they share teh same design,
, but they could also be called "coil overs" as the coil is on the outside of teh shock body.

3rd genereation camaro's used struts as well, but they had a coil spring mountedinboard of the strut, the strut is used as a pivot point to steer,, in replacement of an upper control arm,
so what really defines the term"strut"? who knows, call them what you want, we all understand what they mean and its not worth getting in a petty argument over what a stupid strut is called.

Every time I'd go to the track or even the street there was hop. Tried drag radials, stiff mounts shocks etc. and never cured the problem. Luckily I never broke anything. I now have MT slicks and the problem is history.

Slicks definitely seem to fix the problem, But i think a set of shocks and some a arm bushings would help a lot. I'm also considering building a trac bar setup similar to what some venders sell for the hondas. I think if we can keep from any movement front to rear in the wheel well, the tire will be less likley to want to bounce in and out of traction causing wheel hop.

Brad, I'm not to sure that your idea will work.
I'm not sure just what you mean by a 'track bar', but just reducing the front/rear movement in the lower A arm is not likely to fix the wheel hop problem.
My AWD Lancer (C73A, same front suspension as a colt turbo) suffers from front wheel hop, it has a rose (hemi) joint in place of the front bushing so should in theory have a lot less movement than if it had 2x rubber bushes, yet I still get bad wheel hop when launching.
I have only had this problem since I changed suspension, my previous setup had std shocks with very low springs - ie. almost no useful travel, new suspension is harder an higher.
I think to reduce wheel hop you need to use lots of damping to reduce movement, and it apears that bumpstops do an OK job. :S
