So I'm more than certain I'm still running the original manual rack in my Colt. I have a bit of slop from side to side before the wheel actual starts turning. Can this be fixed by simply replacing the rack? I already replaced my ball joints and tie rod ends, so all thats left are the sway bar end links and bushings.

Internal play in the tooth contact area is normal for any two parts meshed together just like a differential.

If everything else is tight, suspect the rack and or the column. If the column has a U-joint of some sort it can have play also. The "slip" portion on most is not supposed to have play or usually you hear it first.

Check the FSM for the exact spec in degrees of wheel movement from center, before it moves the wheels to know if it is within spec. The contact pattern can be changed on some steering gears (recirculating ball), but for our type, I would have to double check if this is applicable or not. There is only one nut that sets preload inside.

There was talk of 4G racks being identical in many respects, so do some picture sleugthing of the two.
