Hey guys,

Felt it was time I gave back something useful, as you all have been very helpful getting me up to speed on my 89 turbo. So after a lot of researching I figured I could make the evo x struts and shocks work easier than the 1g awd pain in the ass, and well I was right.

So the rears shocks are identical in length to my Kyb's, they also have the correct bottom mounting attachment, so zero welding or fab is required. Guess what the top hats from the X bolt right into the body, you don't even have to change them. It dam near is plug and play on the rears. The only difference is the bottom steal sleeve is narrower by 10mm on the X, so I picked up 4 grade 8 washers to fill in the space. You could press out the csm ones and re-use them if you wanted, or machine a new spacer to press into the X shocks. The rears are that frickening easy. Also I live in the n.w. where tons of guys and gals have Evo X so picking up parts is really easy and cheap. I grabbed these GSR shocks and struts with Eibach lowering springs for $200 even, my end goal is to doing the figuring on this so I can pick up a set of X coilovers, this spring and resale the X shocks and struts. I will post about the fronts when I get back from work tonight

If this nets the performance of Bilstein tuning (with the ability to have them rebuilt also - which Bilsteins can be) and gets identical travel overall (or more ideally), then I say this would be a serious win win.

I am still looking to see what HotBits are offering but that is for another day at this point.

Keep us posted!

this must ride really harsh. evo x is 3600lb car. with stock 18s that likely weigh 50lbs or so. the shocks work well for that. mirage is a 2500lb car with 30/35lb wheel and tire.

^ You would think that it would be stiff as a board, but overall its not much harsher than before. The benefit is evo x parts are plentiful, and your not going to blow these shocks out because they are undersized or over worked. I'm taking my Mirage to the last autocross of the season instead of my mini cooper which rides on Koni d.a. coilovers and 450#/400# springs, the Mirage feels like a Cadillac compared to the MINI. It's soft enough to quickly take a set on turn in and not skip across the pavement, but I think it could use a bigger front sway bar to compliment the Evo X shocks.

Ok so on to the front ( grabbing a cup of coffee........) The fronts are only slightly more involved. The space between the knuckle/hub bolts is identical, but the Evo X is wider by 5mm, so once again I used 2 grade 8 washers per bolt hole. The hidden benefit of the stock X struts vs. my KGB struts is the X's top bolt hole is an flat oval so you can use camber bolts on the tops to dial in some Hella Stance. No honestly I did pick up some camber using my aftermarket bolts $20, and it did help turn in.

So the top side, I removed the evo x hats and measured the strut shaft at 16mm, it also has a flat spot machined into it to keep top spring plate aligned. Mirage strut shaft is a 15mm, so you have to remove or mill down the .5mm of shaft material to reuse the Mirage top hats. I used my mini belt sander 1"x30" and just slowly rotated it, I wouldn't use anything aggressive it doesn't take much to go to far. Also you only need to remove about 3/8" in length because you are reusing the X spring plate and it needs the 16mm shaft.

Overall the car does sit taller in the front and back about 1", I'm sure its because the Eibach springs are much stiffer to supports the Evo x weight. In fact I will try to pick up some stock springs and cut them down to lower the car and soften the ride, I don't want to cut up my Eibachs to play with ride height. Dollar for dollar I don't think there is a better way to go, I'm into this for the cost of the parts, and some grade 8 washers, no machining no custom aluminum spacers or welding taller tabs on the rear beam.

I have a few pics to post up, if someone tells me how.
Thanks

Pics are always welcome.

89Mirageman posted a great way to host pics recently, so you can search his name for that.

Any site that hosts the picture, you simple have to copy the URL for the Pic itself (.jpg ending) and add this before and after:

Also, any dimensions of stock stuff you have, the better.

If I sent you an email that I received from HotBits local distributor, could you take a few quick measurements of the stock suspension and or clearances?

Comparison information between the two platforms (C50 and EvoX) would be the greatest help in developing something (assuming they don't already have it cataloged) at HotBits central.

I never heard back from any email communications with HotBits central, so short of another route of confirmation, Peter (CDN contact) or Larry (USA) will have the final say on how this proceeds.

Really the only difference is in the mounting points. Rears are nearly plug and play and the same overall length. It just needs 10mm longer sleeve in the bottom attachment. I did not even change out the rear top hat. I'm kinda of surprised no one has tried this yet, guys are machining billet spacers to use old 1g awd shocks, but wont spend 200 bucks to try something different.

I bought my set today, $80 for all four stock Evo X GSR struts/springs, wish they were bilsteins from the MR but I guess you can't beat that, I already installed the rears and just confirming too they are bolt on, I just had to use a couple of crankshaft bolt washers and thats it, height now is 1" taller but I'm pretty sure you can solve that with lowering springs for the X, I drove test it and it feels great, pretty stiff on the back but without the bouncing feel, pretty much like OEM suspension...

Will try the front ones later...

Just to help this post, here is a comparison pic

Evo X Rear Strut Top, CSM BottomImage
Believe it or not the CSM strut is slightly taller but that can't be reflected on the floor since Evo X springs are stiffer than CSMs plus Evo X struts are thicker too...
