I know its best to match up part numbers, but what if you can't find the right number.
if I have an 89 4g37, do I have to use one for an 89 4g37? or can I use one from other year 4g37s?
do I have to make sure the car the ecu came from had the same trans as mine? etc etc etc.
I've got a chance at picking up an ecu for my car, but its a different part number.

I would try to find one from the same year. With a manual trans you shouldn't have to worry about any trans control. These early cars aren't too picky on the ecu, one of the upgrades for the 4g15 is to swap in a 4g37 ecu along with the tb/injectors/maf so that'll give you an idea on the interchangeability.

thanks mecha,
I'm having a bear of a time finding the same numbered ECU.
I got an offer from a forum member to sell their ecu. SUPER clean board, great deal. different number.
It's for the same engine and trans as mine, but the number is listed as 1991-1994 :[
