Hi,

I start searching tires for my colt , FWD (eclipse), 4G63T...I'm looking for 205/45 R16. I'm not running on budget and I plan to run this car ±5 000 km/year (±3 000 miles/year) with full performance.

I saw those tires and I would like to get your feedback/review/idea/suggestion

Q : Should I paid more attention to tire side wall to prevend wheels up ?


Yokohama S.Drive (seems to be a frequent tires for DSM 2G).

im getting these in the next few weeks.. did alot of research on tires.. they seem to fit my driving style the best.. but im getting 225-50-16s

they make a re-11 and a re-11a.. the a has a traction rating of 200.. the plain 11 rating is 180.

Hankook Ventus RS3, Dunlop Direzza ZII, or Falken Azenis RT615K's. If they don't make them in that size, get a different size.

The Falken Ziex 912's are not a good all season tire. They are crap in the snow. Good otherwise.

Thanks for your replies.

I don't need all season tires. The colt will be used as a "weekend toy" , so this is why falken make me hesitate.... (i.e. all season tire).

SlowDSM @ Where did you get the traction rating (ex : 200) ?

CaptainTonus @ I understand. But my plan A is to have the right tire sizes, so my odometer meter is accurate. I guess when I have traction problems, my odometer will became the least of my worries... :P

Any others comments / suggestions are welcome.

205/45 16 is an oddball size. You're going to have some difficulty finding a really good tire in that size. This is the main reason I against 16" wheels, in general. 15's are where it's at for a CSM, in my opinion.

if you click the link to the tire I posted.. right under the tire it has 2 tabs..first says customer reviews.... 2nd says sizing and pricing.. click on the 2nd tab.. the 3rd column over says " UTQG Rating " that is the traction rating.. the lower the number the more traction u get.. but at same time less mileage on the tire... for me and how my car runs this is the best option I have found... last set of tires I had were a rating of 400.. and man they sucked..spun all the time when leaving a stop light.


now on to tire sizes.... my colt was swapped with a 4g63 and a DSM trans.. I was told to run 205-55-16s.. (I had 16" rims already).. this is the stock 90 talon tire size so I figured that made since.. well above 40 mph it would be off.. by 100 it was off 6 mph if I recall correctly.... so after talking to a few friends who work at tire shops they said if I went to a 225-50-16 then it should be dead on at the higher speeds and only off by 1 or 2 mph at the lower speeds..


right now in my mirage I have the 205s on it..(im getting the same readings I did with the colt) at 40 on the speedo it was saying 46-47 on a radar gun (the ones cops put on side of the roads) which arent always accurate.. but driving next to people I know with stock its still 3-5 off.... so once I get the tires here in a few weeks I will double/triple check the speed accuracy and post back.

Im not sure why the reason it is off (even is u use the dsm trans and tire size) it doesnt make since.. I was thinking maybe it had something to do with the diff speedo clusters but there isnt a option for gear adjustment in there..its all done in the trans.

205 or 225 refers to the width of the tire, and doesn't have any effect on the speedometer. The height of the sidewall (i.e. 50, 55) is what will effect the rolling diameter, and throw off the speedo. of course, it's all a ratio, so it all makes a difference, but the sidewall is what really matters. You have to look at what size the factory wheel and tire combo is for the car it's going on, not from the car that the engine and trans came from, unless you're using a speedo cable from that car too. On my Mirage, the factory size was 195/55 14 (I think), and I went to 205/50 15, and noticed no issues with the speedo. If you were stepping up to a 16" rim, you'd need a 45 series sidewall, probably.

From what I know of tires the UTQA thingy is a comparison used for tread wear.

Take a tire on a government transportation road test (lab/track or whatever).
Roll said tire a certain calculated distance. Measure wear from original measurement new.
Compare what government standard is to the wear of the tire being compared.

Say government standard is x. Your tire now gets a rating of 100/200/340/520 or whatever based upon wear. Track tires with DOT rating will have a low number from 80-10/200, all seasons generally 240/300+, maximum I've seen is 740 on some high mile rates tires.

Your traction rating is stamped in AA A B or C, C being the lowest.

Your temperature rating is also a set of letters using the same high to low scale for ability to withstand(?) heat.

High speed tires will have stiff side walls, less grooving for water, and create noise now and more so in the future as they wear an get cupped.
Race tires can crack and fail in low temperatures (see recalls on the Dunlop Japan site) and only work properly when up to temp and for a certain number of heat cycles.

Watch for age of tires your are getting. Legally tires cannot be sold if six years old from manufacturer DOT production stamping.
Buy tires locally or Direzza DZII's because thy were only produced this January onward. I looked into them, and you will know when they where produced.

Don't buy race tires, get performance or 3 season/light performance tires like Tonus was mentioning.

I run the Continental Extreme DW in 225/50-16. I haven't been on a track with them yet but so far I really like them.

as dynomike just said above..problems are energy wastageinefficientload on gyserconstant on gyser. why not just go for insta gyser.. or use an electric gyser?
