Just thought I'd post my results. I just installed a '90 fwd DSM tranny (F5M33) in my '89 Colt GT. I used the stock CSM shifter and cables and didn't swap the shift lever arms on the tranny either. You can do this swap with zero addition parts or changing arms, all you have to do is bend the DSM shift arm to match the CSM

Image.

CSM arm on top, bent DSM arm on bottom. Then I just adjusted the cable and shifter base inside the car to fine tune the shift throw.

Isn't the up/down lever different though? Your method is way easier than any other though.

The up/down lever simply bolts on so it can be swapped.

Interesting, how easy was it to bend?

Not too bad. I used two pair of visegrips and channel lock pliers.

You said you didn't swap the shift arms on the tranny either? Does that mean you left the up/down lever or did you swap it with the CSM one?

I copied this mod. PITA with shiny hand tools. I overbent the selector, so now the throw is a bit shorter. Works well, dryshifting only. Car's not running, yet.

Well I bent the lower perfectly or so I thought and swapped the upper arm, 1st 3rd and 5th seem to go in fine but 2nd 4th and reverse seem to hit a stopper because the shifter is too far back now, any idea how to get the shifter more centered without adjusting the interior linkage?

You probably have to adjust the shifter base inside the car. If you remove the rubber bushings from 4 shifter base mount bolts you'll. See the holes in the base assy are rather large. Just use a large washer on the bolts and mount the shifter base directly to the car. Since the holes are bigger than the bolts you'll have plenty of room to move the base around as an adjustment. Plus it helps firm up thw shifter without those rubber bushings. I had to move the shifter base forward to get equal travel on the shifter on the forward throws verses rearward throws. Mine was just like you described above and this fixed it.
