so a girl i know let someone drive her 2003 RSX Type-S. she had worked on her car before the incident and forgotten to put a spark plug in the #3 cylinder (she thought it was mis firing), so anyway there was a guy driving her car and he down shifted at 60 mph into 2nd gear, the car shut off. the skinny on the deal is the number 3 cylinder's valve is missing (most likely shot into the cylinder from the 11k RPM redline with no cylinder pressure) the top of the valve was bouncing around in the head and scuffed the cams, and the retainer has a chipped piece and was floating around also. So far I have concluded that the head may be shot and the #3 cylinder wall is screwed, i have not yet looked at the tranny but i can assume the pressure plate and clutch need to be replaced and she probably spun a few bearings.

questions:
1. Will it be cheaper to replace the engine and clutch? (ill be doing all the work)
2. Is there anything i may have missed that may also be wrong?

So, why the conclusion that bearings are spun? If the cylinder walls are scored, and more than likely are, then grab a crate motor. The clutch is sadly almost guaranteed fine, but if you are in there, pull it and check. If there are no grooves left in the material faces of the clutch plate that we are used to seeing from a full face clutch, or the rivets are very close to wearing through, then yes replace. Flywheel surface not severely cracked, heat checked, or signs of warped contact areas, then might as well bite the bullet. Pretty sure you can get a crate motor to fit, being as you guys are in California. If the only option is to get a crate motor with a trans, you would then have a nice spare.
I think at the least you are pulling the head to see the damage inside, short of a boroscope/camera.

Depends on price really, if I could score a low mileage engine from a wrecked car for a decent price that would by far be my first choice.

if that valve has dropped get a long block. the head is effed, and i bet the piston and rod were just shy of slinging apart and look like a hammered aluminum can. cylinder wall is the least of your worries.

Yup that's what I'm leaning towards. We're removing the head tomorrow so ill post pics of the damage
