| Post subject: | engine beam rubber core support bushings |
at the front of my 89 colt are two bolts that attach to the core support and engine beam, this is part of what holds the engine in the car. i have noticeable gaps/play here, and the rubber bushings all look whooped. the bolts are bottomed out, or frozen solid, looking for pointers on what to do here to stiffen this up, is there a washer i can replace the rubber with, or should i go softer |

im going to try and replace these with washers, or shore up the rubber bushings already there with washers. will report back. |

i just removed the bolts, i took pics, its a large 17mm bolt through a metal sheath with two rubber inserts one between the beam and coresupport the other between the bolt head and beam. my plan is to use washers to compress the rubber thats there, the bolts can only screw in so far, so to tighten it up ill just have to take up the slack with metal. depending on if the car were on stands or on the ground, i had a bit more then an 1/8th inch of play at the top or bottom of these bushings =-O

i have done this...but i drill straight up in front and used washers and tighten all way... i also did same for the back...i drilled up threw floor and used solid bolt with washers...its solid now... |

resulting differences? im doing these today along with new poly mounts in the front and timing side, which are stock and torn. im excited to feel the difference and im hoping its substantial. ill take a look at the other three mounting locations as well to see what can be done. |

i also did all solid motor mounts....results equal very solid but more vibration inside car its not bad worth it for helping with wheel hop |

bolts are back in with 1.60$ in washers i got at home depot. pics and results tmrw as i ran out of daylight and im still fighting to bolt the front motor mount back in. still you figure the foundation of half your motor mounts is a loose easy to jiggle beam, restrained by 20 odd year old rubber bushings, scary. |

results, engine feels much more secure in the bay, before i could feel it rock back and forth with the throttle and that caused a host of other problems. my car got a nasty vibration on hard right turns, i believe this is caused by my dsm axle on the driver side binding up a bit, the new mounts have greatly increased how hard i can take a right before the vibration starts and have reduced its harshness, i believe its because the engine/trans isnt moving as much. shift feel has improved,suspension feel is sharper. i plan to replace the other mounts and ill be taking a look at the other beam mounting location asap. on a negative note, every damn thing in my car rattles now, dead idle is fine just vibes in the seat but city rpms i cant hear my exhaust over the rattles. thats gna be fun to hunt down. |

those mounts were there to absorb that vibration... with solid mounts you will feel the vibration inside, dash rattle, steering wheel shakes... you get use to it... I have the cross member just like you did... but i drilled all way up in front and made a bracket and all way up on the back to and made bracket inside car and used some fat bolts... Along with all solid mounts...makes for a very solid motor in place...helps a bunch with wheel hop! |
