So the rear wheel bearing is going bad on my car. Going onto rock auto it seems there are two options

One is buy the hub and the other is just buy the bearings

Buying the bearing is obviously is cheaper but is there a catch?

The hubs with the bearings are only for the 92 mirage sedan. On those you replace the entire hub as a unit with the bearings. On other cars you knock out the old race, press the new one in and pack the bearings. What car do you have and does it use rear discs or drums?

It is the hatch with drums.

So i should be able to replace just the wheel bearing then instead of the whole hub?

Yep, remove the drum and the wheel bearings will fall out. Get a hammer and punch and knock the races out, press the new ones in, pack the bearings with grease and you're done.

which one is a better choice on going rear disc? 89-91 rear disc models only and avoid those 92 mirage since its bearing cannot be replace instead you have to purchase the entire hub/bearing replacement

The original turbo rear hubs or hubs from any 89-91 with oem rear discs would be my first choice. Then again I have pulled 92 sedan hubs used from the yard with over 100k on them and the bearings were still tight and spun freely. You do need a thicker caliper bracket as Harvey found out though when using 92 sedan rear hubs on a 89-91 car. The lip on the stub axle for the oil seal moves the hubs out a little.

does anyone know if the bearings are different from disc to drum? I know they were all the same front and rear last time I did mine, but another colt is now in need of them.

If you have rear discs and the hubs have replaceable bearings they are the same ones that fit the drums too.

I have punched out the racers from my disc hubs and have a question about what to use to press the new ones fully in. I was using the old race to press the new part in however the old race ends up being pressed in along side the new race.
I had to press the new race out 1/8" away from being fully seated in order to release the old race.
What can be used? I can't find a socket that is just under 2", I don't want to damage the tapered edge. I am using a new 12 ton press from HF. I am new at this type of auto repair.
I am switching from drum to disc :-)
Thanks,
Joe

Place one of the old bearings in the new race and use a socket against the bearing.
