Post subject:  My Car is TOAST

So here is my problem... I know that I am not here as much as I should be or need to be. That is besides the point..

On the way home the other night my car desides to get stuck in second gear.. Here's the funny part.. It's an automatic.
CSM Shaun was driving it at the time of this. We got the car home and the next day we came out to see if it was still doing the same thing. Sure enough it's still stuck in Second gear. It won't go into reverse. It will not allow us to even push it backwards. Only forward.

I guess it's safe to say my car has tranny issues, eh?

Advice or comments preferred..

Did the Gear selector cable pop off the trans?

Haven't tried that one. Is that a common thing to happen with an issue like this one?

Could be a bad shifter cable too. CSM Shawn should be smart enough to figure it out. :P

Tonus: Keyword in your previous post.."SHOULD" be smart enough. I thought thats why I have him is for him to be this smart, mechanically inclined individual. Or so I thought......

Your TCU could have just failed. Check it out and see if it has any issues.

I don't know if it's common, but it's certainly not impossible.

Tis possible, they used crappy caps like the ecu's. I remember seeing something about someone removing the tcu all together and used switches to change gears. AFAIK tcu just controls upshifts/downshifts to a specific load/mph/throttle input.

I'm 99% sure it's not the TCU, because the shifter actuates the valve body in such a way that you should get first and reverse by manually shifting it.

If anyone has the Engine Chassis manual with the KM176, there is a trouble chart of what to look for when stuck in certain gear ranges. I don't have mine here at the house, and the online manuals in the /manuals directory does not have that portion for some reason.

I have not had time to work on it. I have been working on a 1993 Mazda MX3 that I traded my non-running '86 Merkur XR4Ti and '91 Mustang LX for. We had to have something reliable to drive.

The car will roll forward when in neutral with the engine off but not backward. With the engine running it will attempt to move forward when throttle is applied but placing it into reverse produces a feeling like the car is trying to go both forward and backward. I am almost certain the transmission has a gear that is physically stuck in an engaged state.

The resolution will probably be to pull the transmission and rebuild it assuming there is nothing ruined within the transmission. In the event of major damage I will attempt to find a 2g automatic AWD transmission.

Or I will buy her a Geo Metro like I have threatened in the past...
