Well, its been awhile since I've been around on these pages. Over a year I think. Used to always be browsing around here... how life changes.

<wonders if anyone remembers him>

As what often brings folks back, the car is NOT behaving well. And on the old phrase of "don't use it, ya lose it" I seem to have forgotten the details of automotive tech. Been too much into bicycles and computers recently.

Anyway... on to the problem. Stock 4G61T Mirage we're talking 'bout here. On the drive home tonight I notice the car does not have the power it should on boost in 4th and 5th. Then I can feel it sputtering at freeway speed (70mph, 3500rpm). Nurse it the few miles home, get to the offramp, and feels like its got a miss at idle.

Now, I haven't had a chance to check anything yet, but I'm figgering on the basics first. Plugs and wires. Plugs, easy. Wires, should I be looking for something particular? Certain resistance for each one?

Thought 'bout the fuel filter too, but that's not just a quick check. Could probably use a new one tho, as I've had the car nearly two years, and I haven't put one on.

Is there some other basic/simple stuff I need to check?

And if it really comes down to the ugly stuff, and its the ECU, what then? How can I diagnose and where should I start lookin for a replacement?

Only thing I've noticed previous to this was about a week ago it bucked a couple times at low rpm (2500rpm, 3rd gear, slight (3-5psi) boost). (ok, so I was too lazy to shift). That and I've noticed a faint bit of smoke at high revs (6000+) and full throttle. Can't tell if its gas or oil smoke though, only visible when the sun's behind me.

So, I return to ya folks in a time of need. And confusion. And no money. Bleah...

Sounds like ECU if you ask me beg brorrow or steal a Talon ECU and see if it resolves it it it does then get your Colt unit repaired... As a percaution run a bottle of fuel injector cleaner through the system

Z,
Had almost the same problem about 9 months ago with my 89 4g61t. Looked on some of the DSM sites and it seems that the design of the plug wires and plug wells is such that condensation can get into the contacts on the wires where they meet the plug head. This can cause misfiring, wierd idle, but is especially noticable under acceleration, sometimes giving surging and bucking (mine was really bad for that). Because my wires were original, I just replaced them with some Accel 8mm ones and the problem disappeared.
My description of the cause may not be perfectly accurate-it's been a while since I looked it up, but if your symptoms are like mine, go for plug wires.
