So I have Galant VR4 big brakes on my 94 elantra. The problem i'm having is on the driver side. The brakes seem to be opening 1 of the 2 pistons and not retracting enough to let the pad off the rotor. This makes for a rather warm rotor =) Anyone have ideas? I replaced the caliper and the same thing happens. I did find a leak on the passenger side piston seal, which I will need to rebuild I guess. Do you think it will come down to a porpotion valve? Is the piston not retracting or is the brake slider not moving correctly? When you replaced the caliper did you keep the same bracket and female side of the brake slider or was that replaced also? I have never had my VR4 brakes apart so I do not know if there is an internal proportioning valve. You could always partially disassemble the caliper by removing the suspect piston and inspect it and the inside of the caliper for any flaws if you have not already. |

I replaced the complete assembly for the caliper. The exact same thing happens. The piston isn't coming out at all. I'm wondering if it has to do with the elantra porption valve now. |

I wonder if this is common, both brakes have been sitting on the shelf for around a year i bet. |

Could there be a proportioning valve inside the brake it self? I'm doing this test without applying pressure to the piston. I'm wondering if the other piston only starts to move if the first one has pressure to it. Does anyone know? |

I highly doubt there's a porportioning valve inside the caliper, if that's what you mean. Make sure the pads aren't binding up in the bracket. Sometimes rust builds up in there causing the pads to become wedged/stuck. |

The pads are brand new hawk pads. I'm thinking the caliper will only let 1 piston out tell pressure is applied. Going to test tonight |

rebuilt both calipers, same thing! I'm not sure what's going on now. There shouldn't be a problem with elantra master cylinder and galant vr4 big brakes? I bleed both sides, the pedal doesn't seem to be very stiff on the top either. Anyone have ideas? I can also hear what's sound like air when i push in the brake pedal? This isnt making much sense, sounds like it's coming from the pass side. |

Are the brake lines in good shape? Maybe disconnect them on each end and blow them out to make sure. |

That sound you hear is the master cylinder compressing. They are on the right side on these cars, as im sure you are aware. Make sure both slider pins are clean and smooth. If they are hanging up than they will not allow the brake to return once you're off the pedal. Do you have the vaccuum line running to the booster? There should be a one way valve going to the back of the throttle body. Might want to make sure that its installed correctly. I doubt that would be the cause of your problems but its worth checking into.
