So I found a 1990 Galant Auto with silver metallic oil. The engine runs until it gets hot, then it locks up. I can probably pick this thing up for *super* cheap.

The good news? It has the sohc :) That means my 1.5L should bolt right in and be nearly a plug and play affair.

Is there anything I should know about that might not work out sticking the 1.5L into the Galant? Wiring harness should be nearly identical.

Wow, I didn't know they made Galants with the 1.8 liter. I figured they all came with SOHC 4G63 N/A's. Crazy.

Well maybe it is the SOHC 2.0, but the intake mani, head, and wiring harness looks identical to the 1.5L.

What flywheel is on that thing? 6 bolt?

How would I mate up the 1.5L to the auto trans on the Galant?

It's a 6-bolt. Same flywheel as the N/T 2.0 1g FWD's.

CAPS lists different torque converter part numbers between (I imagine) 3 and 4 speed transmissions.

Can anyone confirm if every torque converter is physically the same? I need to make sure the flex plate bolt pattern that bolts to the torque converter is the same between 1.5L Mirage/1.8L Eclipse, and the 2.0L motors.

power to weight wont be on the sluggish side? that more than likely is an old gen 4g93 model engine? 1.8 SOHC? they also came in some of the Expos (or Chariots or RVR shaped vehicles).

they're pretty good for torque etc and have similar properties to the 4g15 as u are discovering.

i think that car wont move too well and some sucky gas consumption figures (smaller engine pulling heavier vehicle).

we got our JDM Galants (from that era) with 3 engine combos:

4g67 (1800 DOHC/ auto or manual)
4g63 (2000 DOHC/auto or manual)
4g93 (1800 SOHC/auto)

nothing smaller....

for info purposes, we also get:

4g93 GDI (1800 DOHC/auto)
4g94 GDI (2000 DOHC/auto)

these are the new model motors.

Maybe we can narrow it down from the pictures.

It's definitely a 4G63 SOHC. That was the base engine for the Galant AFAIK.

Every Galant of that era that I have ever seen in the yards(quite a few) is a 4g63 sohc.

yes. forgot to mention that we also did get local new Mitsu Galants with a 4g63 SOHC. but they came in 5th gen sort of era. definitely not like these.

got a chance to peek at the engine code stamp? even that back plate with the chassis # info etc. usually has code on it as well.

Definately a 4g63 sohc. I had a 90 galant last year and had to engine swap. 4g15 sohc should just be plug and play. Just need to swap engines and ECUs... Not sure about the crankshaft bolt pattern as I've never pulled off the tranny on my left over 4g15.
