 Post subject: Phenolic Intake Spacers

For those who don't know, a phenolic intake spacer is a 1/4" thick piece of composite that spaces the intake manifold from the head. The idea being that the spacer keeps the manifold from absorbing the heat from the cylinder head, and thus keeping your intake charge cooler. I have one and I'm ready to install it, but can't find anyone who can tell me how to do it properly. Hopefully someone on here knows the for sure answer.

The question is; does the spacer require two gaskets or does it replace them entirely?

yea I think it just replaces the gastets..is it that hard of a material?

It is a very hard material. I did manage to find a site that make them for the 6G72's and they recommend sandwiching the spacer between two gaskets. Now they did say recommend, so I'm guessing you could go either way. Just to be safe I'm going to get another gasket on monday.

Can someone without an intercooler please take some temp readings from their intake manifold after normal driving. I want to see how well these things work if at all.

Just use some sensor safe RTV silicone on both sides of the spacer if you don't want to get another gasket.

Here's a site that shows installation on a Mazda KL-03 in a Ford Probe GT, but you'll get the basics.

They seem to work fairly well. But one thing to think about. Sure it keeps your intake cooler, but it traps more heat in your cylinder head and block. If you think about it, your intake is going to act as a heat sink of sorts for the engine, pulling heat away from the head and block. When using a spacer, you're going to insulate the intake and trap more heat in the head and block.

Is it really something to worry about? I'd say probably not as long as your cooling system is in tip top shape, but something to keep in mind.

Jason, where did you get your spacers? I found a site, but they won't be available for a couple of weeks. I'd rather not wait. Their prescribed installation was to use the regular gasket on the hot side and the spacer with a coat of RTV on the manny side. (Hope this isn't too late.) Bill Spruill

I would put gaskets in there. They're phenolic spacers, not phenolic gaskets. ;-) It does suck to have to use two intake manifold gaskets, though.

Well, I wound up using two gaskets. It wasn't that big of a deal. I bought mine off a guy on eBay who had them custom made. He offered me a few extra that he had. If you'd like I can see if he still has some.

The guy got back to me rather quickly. He said he has only one left. When I get my 2G Eclipse GSX I plan on using a spacer again. I'll give Bill first crack. I would think it may be a good idea to have more made.

And Bill, I hope one of these days you learn to leave your correct email address. Luckily this mess up was easier to understand. :lol:

:oops: :-? Sorry about the email thing. I tried twice , but the machine just wouldn't print it. Anyway, thanks for the help. Motor is now ready for the pan, timing belt (seems the new one that I had is just a tad too large, dnk why), mannifolds, etc. blspruill@cox.net How's that?
