When the car sounds like it is going to blow up I shift quickly.

You need to find out where your car reaches it maximum power.

In most cars the the engine will reach maximum power before it reaches the red line. So once you go past the maximum power you will start loosing power.

Sometimes going past the max power point is fine as long as it has more power than the revs you will get in the next gear once you have changed.

To put this into practice:
If your maximum power is say 135hp at 6000rpm in 1st gear and then you shift, once you have changed to second you may drop drop the revs to 4500rpm with a power figure of say 100hp. Now if you change gears at say 7000rpm your power will have dropped from the peak power of 135hp to say 125hp but when you shift to 2nd gear the revs will be higher at maybe 5000rpm and the power figure would be about 110.

So its all about finding where you have power at what rev range and what power figure you have once you shift gears.

To do this a dyno sheet is good or a Gtech pro compitition performance meter or somthing similar.

Or just practice to se what shifting points gives you the best time.

Hope that helps

I don't want to sound like I'm a nag, but if you haven't got a known state on whether you're timing belt is set properly (or too old!) and if you're ignition system is clean enough to handle a high rpm shift point, you might want to look into that before you punch, shift, punch bang and the car turns itself off for you. :o
I'm sure you treat your car the way you feel at the time but a little preventative maintenance can save a head and/or piston/crank job.
Hope this helps too

in all actuality you are looking for peak torque, and to shift into the torque curve right before the peak, so dyno sheets are really helpful.

Dyno sheets are nice but unless you have them for all gears it only tells you your range in one gear. I drag out my 1 & 2 gears till red line, I know the power tappers off but the lower gearing still allows me to accelerate faster. I then shift sooner from 3-4 to keep the car in its power band. I can't give you exact shift points since all cars are different.
