Okay, so I'm going to source a manual gearbox today. Wondering if I should find an LSD for it? I've heard they make the steering heavy and cause the car to plough in corners... Then again the prospect of nice, even 2WD instead of 1WD really appeals to me.

So, do any of you autocrossers have LSDs? Are they worth it on an FWD or do they mess with the steering too much?

I have one. I didn't notice that the car felt heavier. They do cause the car to plow if you enter a corner off throttle. Get on the gas and the plowing goes away.

If you get one, you'll have to adjust your driving for it.

jason, do you have an insert or a actual differential, like a Quiaffe?

what types of limited slip differentials are available for the 89 colt/mirage transmissions....

i'm assuming quaiffe...is there anyone else like kaaz, ats, or an OEM unit in the european/japanese cars?

i'm not interested in a phantom grip.

Out of curiosity, how does a Phantom Grip or B&M adapter stack up to the "real thing"? 'Coz I AM interested in a Phantom Grip. I'm cheap.

BTW the only OEM unit I know of came in the CC-chassis (4th gen, like the one under my username on the left) Asti coupe or Cyborg hatchback with 4G92 MIVEC, or in the Evo I-III RS. You'll have to import it from Japan, Australia, or New Zealand. If your Talon is FWD the MIVEC box should work (it's a variant of the F5M22), if you have AWD get the Evo one.

I have a Phantom Grip, and it works great. Haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces since the engine crapped out. But basically as usual, anything for a 1G DSM diff will work. Rule of thumb is if youre road racing or auto-x, get a helical diff like the Quaife. If you're dragging and you want the best 60 ft times you can get, go with the clutch types like the KAAZ or the conversion kits like the B&M and Phantom Grip.

ok...

what about a 1g fwd talon/laser/eclipse transmission...did they come with OEM lsd's...?

it seems like this would be the easiest solution...although i might just spend money on a quaiffe.

I think quaife is better for drag racing since it is strong and autotech will fix/replace it even if used at the strip. Also works well for autox etc.

For road racing I would go with a LSD instead since a the quaife wont work if one drive wheel comes off the ground. Also, LSDs can be configured to suite your specific application.

The quaife will actually give up with one wheel anywhere close to being off the ground.

It demands a different driving style. Works great when you get the hang of it though.

I have a Quaife with like 320 WHP and this car is HAIRY to drive. You can't tell where it's going during heavy power in a curve. In a straight line with good street tires sometimes it scares me, with torque steer, in 3rd and 4th. It feels like the power is being transferred back and forth as one of the wheels slightly losses traction. As the speed gets up in the 80 - 100 MPH thats hairy. With slicks in the 1/4 its just fine.
It's not just me, I've heard this from others.

What kind of set up would be best to eliminated 1 wheel spin but still be street driveable- without the clicking and sutch?

I had a 96 galant s that had a LSD. I would assume this came from factory as the car was totaly stock when I bought it. Being that it had the 2.4 in it I was going to look in junk yards for one to use in my colt. this could be a cheap solution to you question. Does anyone know the gearing the 5 speed 2.4 had?
