Post subject:  low offset rims pros and cons?
I have been shopping around looking for a set of rims and tires for my colt (89). I stumbled upon some cheap race type rims, however they have a low offset. I know i could fab something up to correct camber, but does anybody know any advantages or disadvantages to running a low offset rim?

here is the rim brand:

contrary to the picture, and the euro hotness; With what they have in stock, it would be in a form of a 15x7 wheel, with a 4.5"(+12) backspacing. Or if i can go to a 15x8 with a 5.5"(+25) backspace, if they fit. OR I could just ask to get a custom rim made for 5.5"( +38 ) of backspacing, but this is why im asking first what would be the disadvantages and advantages to a low offset rim.

if anybody has any experience in running a low offset on their colt, tell us how it turned out! It's hard finding any pictures with rims that have a low offset on a colt.

A +12 or +25 will not fit on a CSM. It will stick way out past the fenders and look stupid, and no amount of camber correction will fix it. If you can get a custom backspacing in a +38 offset then that would fit, but it wouldn't look like the wheels look on that VW in the picture.

The major disadvantage to running too low of an offset is mostly the wheel not fitting on the car and looking stupid. It also puts more stress on the wheel bearings.

your reply has quite some negative feedback!

so im confused, the +12, and +25 won't fit, but will give the car a stupid look with uncorrectable camber? This statement inquires that they had been fitted to be seen like this! But i understand what your saying.

I'm not caring so much about the getting the look of the VW, just don't wanna pay the little extra to get them "custom" made. and the way it looks is an opinion.

thanks for a little bit of info. does anyone have any stupid looking pictures of a colt with low offset wheels :lol:

Since we are oval racing our car we could use the low offset rims on the right side of our car to get more left side weight . Anyone know what 14'' or 15'' rim cars have the same 4 bolt pattern as a Colt that we could use ?

Fox body mustangs Dunno what years that encompasses but 88 Mustangs definetly work. Depending on your racing series you need to run 4 identical offset rims just something to think about...

You are correct that some series / tracks mandate the same rims all the way around but a few we go to dont . The other rule that most tracks have is that the tire cannot protrude out past the fender by more then 1''.

I will have to grab a Mustang rim and bolt it on to see just how far it hangs out .

The picture I posted, the wheels were from a Mustang. Also Accords and 240SX's have the same bolt pattern. And maybe Miata's?

If that is how far stock Mustang rims hang out i can pretty much forget about trying to get those through tech . I am currently using Accord and 240SX rims (15'') but need to find some wider stock (14'') rims around 5.5'' - 6'' . I did do a search to see if anyone had listed other cars that have wheels of various sizes that have the same bolt pattern as a CSM but have had no success . Anyone with any information on this would be greatly appreciated

Made a nice find for 14'' alloys that will fit our cars . Infiniti G20 rims are 6 '' wide the correct offset and very light . Like all Nissan rims you have to open up the center hole 25 thou .
