This may have been addressed before but has any of the AWD guys ever put in for Sport Compact Car's Ultimate street car challenge? I know you have to be voted in or something and i've seen a couple csm's featured in their magazine. I think it would be intresting to see how a light 4g63 powered AWD CSM would fair against the competition.

It would never win. Scot Gray's DSM has been in the competition twice, as have a few other DSM's, and they always kick ass in all the performance tests, but fail miserably in pretty much any other test. The judging is way too strict on the way the car is engineered and the way the car drives and performs on the street as far as things like comfort, A/C, and ride quality are concerned. Someone simply isn't rich enough to pull it off when they have competition from all the big shops in LA. If RRE can't pull it off, I don't know who could.

I guess I didn't take that into consideration. It would still be cool to see one in it. I would put my money on a WELL executed LS1 turbo'd RX7. They are always last minute builds without much test and tune.. probably like most of the rest of the entries.

Not enough traction, it would lose. The LS1-powered RX-7 that was in the competition last year was pretty damn bad-ass, and it still got owned in pretty much every category except for the skidpad. No one has even been able to build an EVO that could take first place, and I'd think that would be as good a canditate as any.

You need a car that:

1.) Is fast as hell, makes tons of power.
2.) Is engineered to the gills, no stone un-turned, every weld is perfect, everything is where it's supposed to be.
3.) Is easy to get in and out of, comfortable to ride in, has working A/C and heater, has a full interior.
4.) Handles INSANELY well, has tons of grip, can do auto-x or road racing.
5.) Will also go fast in a straight line (that part usually isn't a problem)
6.) Will pass an emissions test. (haha, good luck)
7.) Will get good gas mileage
8.) Will do gigantic burnouts on cue, donuts, drifts, whatever.
9.) Was cheap to purchase brand new.

I'm not saying it can't be done with a CSM, but it probably can't be done. Haha.

That competition sounds pretty gay.

Some aspects of it are extremely gay, but I think it does a pretty good job of judging a TRUE street car. Lots of us have race cars that we drive on the street, and we live with it, but 99% of the population would be miserable driving our cars around. It really is a challenge to build a car that can kick serious ass on the track and the street, and also be livable on a day-to-day basis. You just need lots of money.

Last year it was an R34 Skyline GT-R

I know one year a 2nd-Gen MR2 with a 1MZ-FE swap won, that thing was AWESOME. I think the very first year they did it a Ferrari 360 Modena won, and there may have been a Supercharged 350Z in there somewhere as well. Last year it was a real close one between the Skyline and an insane VW Bettle "R32" with a twin-turbo 3.2L DOHC V6 and an AWD swap from an Audi TT. The only reason the Skyline won is the Beetle broke, I think.

Every year it seems a lot of the same cars enter. There's always a couple of EVO's, a Skyline, a 350Z, a DSM, or something outrageous like an Ultima GT-R or some other ridiculous kit car. They try to be as fair as possible, but the test results speak for themselves.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the Viper. Last year the LS1-powered RX-7 seemed like an awesome candidate for the trophy, but the tests are all so broad and different that it ended up losing pretty bad.

It's missing the last one, which was won by the GT-R, and the MR2 isn't in there, but there may have been one more.
