I know the awd's weld the center diff to make it 4x4, i was wondering if i welded the center diff in a spare awd tranny i have and converted to fwd mode, would that give me a "lsd"?

thankyou

No. It gives you a locked diff. Completely different. You don't wanna do that.

No matter what, you're gonna end up spending $$$ on a real LSD. Since your drive, brake and steer with the same set of tires, you are really gambling trying something like a welded diff in a fwd.

FWIW, I found these browsing around...I havent tried one, but the design looks very close to a detroit locker true trac diff. This means it works just like the quaife, but is considerably less expensive. It also has the speedo gear already machined onto the diff itself, which is an added perk. I believe we would use the small axle shaft model.

You could also use an insert like SBR sells but I'd just wait and do it right the first time with a true LSD. That's alot of labor just to do it all over again later.

Phantom Grip is cheap, and it works.

I picked one up for cheap from someone unwilling to install it. Takes maybe an hour to install and made quite a bit of difference.

I've heard horror stories about Phantom Grips, but it's all internet mumbo-jumbo for the most part. I've heard they destroy the diff if you get any wheel-hop whatsoever. I mean, I know wheel-hop is bad no matter what, but it made it sound like the diff would be done right now. I've also heard they make your handling go to sh*t. Any truth to these rumors?

You see a problem here?

:)

And its still shifting great for its new owner. I never had a problem with it, and have never heard of exploding diffs because of it. If someone's diff came apart after the install, it would be because they f-ed up the install itself. So IMO, no truth to the rumors.

Just my observation...after about 30K miles of driving with a BM tranny LSD in my last trans, I noticed substantial wear grooves on the shims underneath the spider gears of the diff.

That is the only real issue, that they will "wear" out and there is no real way to rebuild them other than stiffer springs, or installing a new insert.

JP, did the gears make a wear mark on the insert? Mine wore those chrome plated cup washer shims under the gears. To be expected by design though.

I will add that my LSD insert was installed for probably 50 dragstrip passes and a ton of street abuse, I only stopped using the trans because it shifted very grindy/notchy and needed attention. The drivability was AOK, no real issues there.

Yes, that’s how they wear, and yes, it is expected by design. Ant time that thing is "slipping" and trying to make the wheels spin evenly in a turn or on hard launches, it wears in that area. There is really not much you can do about it besides running thinner oil maybe (or a tougher material for the plates)? I actually ran 20-50 in my case, and upon inspection the insert was not badly worn at all.

I heard the phantom grip LSD's had trouble in the beginning because they were using springs that were not strong enough. AFter failures, they switched to a stronger spring and the failures are not as common now.. and the price is VERY good.

I know I'm gonna get bashed for this but the welded dif in T61's colt was just fine. He did keep his power steering though. The next tranny that goes in my colt will have a welded diff.
