I have an 1989 colt 4g15. Was driving fine, when it started to make load rattling noises. Maybe the belt is loose? I tried to tighten it but am struggling to figure out how. Link of the noise is below. https://youtu.be/GdKNzh0OiTM |

The tensioner is a suspect here. Is it tightened down i. e. is it screwed completely into the block? Is its bearing not shot? |

Thanks for the response. I removed the timing belt and tensioner completely and they both seem fine. They also seemed tight when they were installed. I replaced them both around 20,000 miles ago. Now I'm thinking it could be the harmonic balancer.

It sounds much like a bearing. Alternator or water pump maybe? |

Could be a rocker arm out of adjustment. They are solid and require periodic adjustment with a feeler gauge and a 10 mm socket/torque wrench. If a stethoscope directly down to the bolt head on the tensioner doesn't show the sound louder to your ears, suspect and test at the valve cover in different spots. A long and large handled screw driver can provide the same effect I am told. Valve cover is very easy to remove and is probably leaking anyways, because old petrified gaskets. |

I Couldn't figure it out so I brought it into a shop. Turned out to be a worn out sprocket. It was worn in the center causing it to rattle. |

Glad you got it sorted. Not a good sound. Hopefully was only a few hundred dollars to get it repaired. |
