Okay so got the car not running, no spark. Changed distributor and fired right up. Set timing to 5* with plug on firewall grounded and filled up with 87 and it was pinging in 3rd and 4th under load. Fill up with 93 and all is well. What the hell is going on here? Not really a fan of spending an extra $5 every fill up. On a side note, every once in awhile when i start the car i hear a relay start clicking about a half dozen times and then it stalls out. Hit the key and it fires right back up. Any help is much appreciated. Plugs, wires, cap, rotor, distributor, O2 sensor have all been replaced in past month.

as far as i know 4g15 min octane rating is 95, so everything is ok :) turn your timing to 0-1 btdc this maight help.

So no pump gas, since the highest you'll usually find in US is 93.

Might want to look into the fuel system. Injectors could be dirty, fuel filter, etc.. The clicking you're hearing could be the fuel pump relay on it's way out.

Fuel filter also less then month old, i guess injectors are possible. Also only seems to ping when its up to temp. I have all the 4g37 upgrade parts but was waiting til car was running 100% before i put them on.

Performancas was referring to 87 Octane = 95 RON or whatever the Euro/Asian fuel octane rating calculator is called.
He would have topped even the top gas pump Octane rating fuel for Canada, which I know to be 94. 8)
Aircraft and race track fuel stations need not apply ....

I know the 4g15 loves to sound pingy up top under load, and putting on the 4g37 parts means you have different timing curves and loads points, so the motor is being worked differently.

Even if you cleaned your piston tops and combustion chambers, it might not make a big difference.

If for some reason, we were thinking that the EGR system was plugged or not functioning properly, I could see combustion chamber temps staying higher and carbon bits glowing being a point of soreness for the user listening to the ill effects of heat on a motor that runs excessively hot compared to other 4 cylinder designs. These seem to be some of the issues that I read about over time when owning and dealing with during my time of ownership of 2 4G15's, one of which had the 4g37 gear on it.

The clicking from the dash is likely from the ECU shutting down the engine as the MPI relay gets triggered on and off due to leaking capacitors on the main board, causing this ill effect. I've been left stranded from just such an instance with a 4G15 within a few short months of ownership = also the reason I learned how to track down the electrical gremlins related to this issue. Also my 4g61t would cycle the MPI relay due to severely leaking capacitors on the 90 Eprom board that was running the car.

Double check the timing. Is there a timing tab you need to ground first? I can't remember if 4g15's had them or not, I assume they do.

Seafoaming the chamber may help clean up any hot spots from carbon deposits as well. Also, a bit into the gas tank will help clear the injectors, if those are clogged. Thats where i would start.

Have ran 3 different brands of injector cleaner in past month. Plug on firewall was grounded when timing was done and also rechecked it and it is spot on. Havent done the seafoam yet but plan on it this week. Pulled plugs to see how they looked and they were perfect light brown tint to them. Am also having inspection issues with HC ppm, max is 220 but car putting out 514. Also found this on the site from previous owner.

Yea, I would definitely look into using a stock ecu, the difference in fuel needs between the engines alone can cause some issues

So a little update. Car died on me and left me stranded at work. After a little detective work it came down to MFI relay or ECU. Relay tested good so took out ecu and popped in the 1.8 ecu i had. Fired right up. Also pinging has gone away while running 87 octane. Feels like a new car to me now. Also bought a stock 1.5 ecu from ebay but appears to have leaky capacitor. You be the judge since idk what excatly im looking for.

I always look over ecu's with a flashlight because you can see a lot more. It does look like that one has at least one leaky cap though. It still may work fine but either way I'd send it out for repair because it will give trouble in the future.
