Post subject:  Difference between 4g13 and 4g15 engine

I was wondering if anyone in the forum knows where the engine serial number is stamped on the 4g13/4g15 engines. This is my first Mitsubishi (I'm a Honda guy). I bought this car in Laos (so I think it may be from Thailand with a lhd conversion) but it had the VIN plate ripped off. The chassis code is C10AKG.

Also what is the horsepower of either 4g13 carb or 4g15 carb? I see lots of conflicting answers.

I usually keep my cars clean, but it is hard here because of the dirt roads.

Thanks in advance

It should be stamped where the head meets the block over by the engine mount on the timing belt side.

Oh and a question. Are the 4g13/4g15 engines (like mine ?)newer than the ones in the Dodge Colt in the USA? The carburetor is different and the distributor on the right side. I see the carb setup and distributor on the left by the battery (similar to mine) on cars like the Mitsubishi Mirage (lancer) 1987-1991.

Definitely need to see a pic of the car. Colts/mirage/summit's went to Fuel Injection in 1989 models

Ahh. This is what we saw as an 85-88 model Colt. The motor is older and carbureted. They did have a turbo model that hot-piped directly into the carb.

on the pic of the engine bay.. there is that silver and black plate rivited to the firewall. that should say what motor you have... and I think here in the states the 1.5 made 84 HP

Hi,

if i look on the pikture, they look same as mine 1991 C51 engine.
a 12Valve is buildet after 5/1990 und that the car is no Injektor, it will be a 1.3ltr with 75PS/55KW.
The engine is good. look at oil and water, and it runs a loooooong time.... not fast, but Long....

Thanks everyone for the great responses.

@slowdsm Thats the first place I went to check, but my silver VIN plate was ripped off. The only code I see is on the firewall I believe it is the chassis. C10AKG700035

@Christian421
I really like this car. I do check the fluids every week and oil as well. The car does leak a bit of oil but I just buy extra to refill a quart every 3 weeks or 1 month. It is not as fast as my car back home (88 honda prelude si) but I feel with the manual transmission and how light the car is it has great acceleration off of a red light. Here in Laos traffic usually goes about 40/50km and many times slower than that so speed isn't that much of a deal.

There is a car shaped like mine that was sold in Thailand called the Mitsubishi Lancer Champ. They all have the engine design like mine distributor on left and newer type carb filter cover. I originally wanted to find out if it was the 4g13 or the 4g15 and looked for the engine serial stamp but couldn't find it either. I checked near the timing belt side where the head meets the block but couldn't see. The roads here are dusty so everything gets caked with orange dirt. Does anyone have a pic of where it would be exactly :-s

This is the older 4g13/4g15 style engines? ( I am not sure please correct me if I am wrong) I see this in the Dodge Colt and the earlier Mitsubishi Lancer Champs in Thailand.

You can also look at your VIN and find out what engine you have. I can't remember what digit it is though. I'm sure a quick search on decoding Mitsubishi VIN's would lead you in the right direction.

Also free sites like Carfax may be able to help. Most of the time you can go there and plug in your VIN and it'll give you the basics of the car like engine size, etc.

Mine had 4G15 stamped on the surface of the engine block where the head bolts on. Looking at the engine from the front it'll be on the lower right corner closest to you. Right there where the engine mount by the t-belt wraps around the front. Get a rag and some carb cleaner and clean that spot off and you will see it.

Thanks 89Mirageman,

The only thing about the VIN is that I have no documentation as I bought the car used. Here we have like a car information book and the engine was written as 4g12 (by whoever owned the car not by Mitsubishi or a dealer) so I don't think they really knew what they were writing.

I took the carb air cover off and looked where the head met the block kinda close to spark plug #3 and #4 and saw some numbers g1 3V and M16.

They probably made a mistake on the paperwork, it is most likely a 4g13. The 4g13 has the "squished" ends on the valve cover.

Cool thanks again everyone so it seems the consensus is I have a 4g13 engine. I like the performance from red lights, here there are many traffic jams and literally 0 highways.

If in the future I wanted to get a little bit more hp and keep the same body, what engines do you recommend that fit in the chassis of my car? I like the overall style of the c10 Lancer (and its light weight) and late 80's early 90s Japanese cars, more than the boring car shapes of today.
