So I have a 1995 Mirage Sedan 1.5l 3 speed auto. It passes emissions, new plugs and wires and replacement air filter. Car idles ok but is dreadfully slow. Worse off is I only get roughly 20mpg combined and 23 if I'm on the highway a lot. Is this normal for the 3 speed auto? If so what manual trans will bolt up to it? Only mods are 16" rims and HKS coilovers and the Evo III body

You should see in the 30s. Has the timing been checked?

Surprisingly I haven't. Hmmm I thought 21 was low but then again it is a 3 speed. I'll check. Any other reason it may be in case timing is on track? Would dirty injectors do it?havnt compression checked it either

Keep in mind, the higher your cruise RPM, the lower your economy. My 97 Ford Aspire 1.3 3-spd auto got 9L/100km (26mpg), and it was in top shape. At 100kph (60mph), it was turning nearly 3500 rpm :(. I shudder to think what my mpg would have been like at 65 or 70...

3 Speed auto? Yeesh. If it's a 4gXX motor, any 4g trans should bolt up including 4 and 5 speeds.

Excellent. I'll prob just throw a stock clutch and flywheel Assy on there and call it a day and say hello to lower cruise rpms and better gas mileage

I had one with the auto and I saw 41 every now and then, but average was about 33. It also shifted into third at 15mph if you allowed it, crazy low.

Okay guys changed plugs and 2,3,4 Looked nasty. #1 looked normal BECAUSE the plug wire was not clipped on. It had probably been misfiring for a while lol. Anyway going to check base timing either today or tomorrow. Car idles a little better after the plug change but still not right

Well I changed the thermostat because it was dicked, didnt seal at all, I didnt notice any fuel economy differences with the plugs but the thermostat yielded me 5 MORE MPG! now that it is running at opp temp. next is base timing and a new rotor cap since its probably original. ill update with my findings

If you want a little more pep in its step.
The Accel product I saw on ealier posts was good but it didn't last more than a year. And the colt died on the highway halfway between my house and Seattle. That was a joyous time I tell ya what!

When I get the colt all back together I will be switching the accel over to the msd ignition 8228 blaster replacement coil. You need the adapter to make it work buts its all easy.

---Adapter---

if you need to look at the other posts there are some in the archives on other great tips on better performance and some of them actually gain you a little more MPG :)

I appreciate the advice and links but I am just waiting for the engine to die so I can swap the forged 4G63 I'm building into her. To hell with gas mileage I'll have a 68HTA blowing away!!
