I've started to develop an alternator whine, and looking into the issue I've found that the bolt that is supposed to hold my alternator was missing. I temporarily used a long bolt and nut clamped tightly to keep it from going anywhere, but there is a lot of play/twist of the accessories belt as revs increase, as the bolt I used as a replacement is a bit thinner than the original, and I'm not quite sure how to go about finding the correct bolt size. So, I searched on here, came up empty handed and thought I'd ask.

Thanks for any help.

Are you asking about the bolt that holds the alternator to the block at the bottome of the alternator or the bolt that holds it to the adjuster arm on the top of the alternator?

Bolt that holds the alternator to the block. The adjuster arm is fine, but due to the other bolt being too small the alternator twists in place and the pulley becomes unaligned and squeals.

Just. Call the dealer, or grab another one from the junk yards. It's a special bolt, only place it's used is the alternator.

Gay lol. I haven't found any colts in junkyards around here and I feel like I'm gonna pay 10 bucks for a bolt from the dealer. Gotta do what I gotta do I guess.

22 months later, and I need this exact same bolt (the long one that holds the bottom of the alternator to the block) for my 1995 Dodge Colt coupe. I know it's called the alternator pivot bolt, but I can't find a part number or the proper size to replace it with.

Hopefully you're still on these forums, Shaun, and hopefully you still have the bolt. My garage is quoting me 6-8 weeks for delivery from Japan, and I have no idea how expensive that's going to be.

I'm up in Canada (where they continued selling the Colt for one more year, hence I have a '95 that is almost impossible to find). And I broke this damn thing myself when it was rusted solid and I needed to adjust the tension on the alternator belt because of <ugh> belt squeal. The belt squeal itself, that turns out to be because the bearings in the alternator are seizing up. Alternators are easy to find, yay! Alternator pivot bolts, they're an obsoleted part and the local wreckers don't have them.
