91 CSM with an auto tranny.

This car is 200 miles away. Owner says that the first tranny went and only reverse worked. Had another junkyard tranny installed and only reverse works. Could this be as simple as a TCU replacement, or does he have two junk trannys with the car.

If they are both junk can a 4 speed auto tranny from a sedan work?

Thanks,

George

p.s. Wife will not drive a manual transmission!

Automatic transmissions almost never just kill all of their driving gears. I would expect, like you have, that the TCU is bad. I am not sure if the sedan trans will work. For $300 how can you say no? Is the car in Indiana?

I went and picked it up... how did you know I paid 300? The force must have been with you! Car has a few rust bubbles in the usual places. The dash is nice, cloth interior, and has the door panels with the side pockets. Odometer reads 70,000. All in all well worth the money.

When the TCU goes out it puts the tranny in limp mode, which is 3rd gear I think. I know this is true on 1g dsm's so I'm assuming its the same with csm's.

I changed out the tranny with a good one. Car runs and drives great!

I have electrical problems... no turn signals or driver side headlight. Emergency lights work but when turned on the temperature gauge bounces in tandem with the flasher. This car has sat in a barn for years. Maybe mice looking for a meal?

Mechanically I am ok... but lack in electrical knowledge. Where would you start looking?

TIA

George

Download the FSM from lilevo.com/mirage and start checking connections and relays.

The signals always seem to do that. My guess is that you just need to clean the contact in the steering column. It's been a long time since I've done it or I'd provide more details.

I took it apart today and cleaned the terminals with emery cloth and you were correct... I now have turn signals. I also learned the turn signals will not work without the hazard switch in place.
I will try to track down the headlight tomorrow.

Thanks,

George
