How strong are they in comparison to others hooked up to other DSM engines? I realize this sounds completely noob but it fits since my summit has this engine and tranny. Guess what I'm asking is can they take a little slap and tickle or are they too wimpy for mild highway fun?

mine broke from about 110 hp. Although I did drop shift it. It will brake with 200+ hp and you will get crappy gas milage. If your going to use a dsm engine just grab the auto tranny with it.

Of coursed this tranny is made for this engine and when I do the swap it will be replaced with the swap tranny as well. I do want to stick to a 4 speed auto if possible. For example, I go with a 4g63t with a matching 4 speed auto "turbo" tranny, it should be ok with 250 hp? I dont want to go hog wild with this, just enough to make the ricers and wannabes run away crying. I can make up for lack of power with a little skill, luck, and insanity :supz:

Upgrades I know I will be doing will be the 4th gear clutch pack, possible valve body, and diff for sure. Did I miss anything? 8)

you should be fine with 300hp as long as you upgrade the tranny cooler. someone on the board removed the tcu and just had shifts, I forget who that is though.

Nah, I will keep the TCU, perhaps look for upgrades but basically keep it stock. The big things I know of are clutch packs, valve body, torque converter and the diff. Most certainly the diff! :supz:

I will definitely move the tranny cooler from the rad to an external unit. Maybe run special tranny fluid, as long as it doesn't fry it in the process. Does royal purple have a tranny fluid that I can use? I am a little leary because with my old wagon (R.I.P.), I put some Lucas tranny stabilizer in it and it never worked right since.

just use the recommended stuff, sounds like you have had enough with the snakeoils. nowadays the standards of auto fluids are pretty high. though you would benefit from a complete system flush and or teardown of a auto tranny.

Agreed. Dont need it going boom when I am trying to lay it down.

Stock 1G AWD autos are pretty stout. I'm pretty sure people have went 10's on them, stock converters with probably a shift kit.

I am keeping it FWD only for now to keep the cost down. Keep in mind I fried an AWD O/D clutchpack once doing 90mph in 3rd and hitting the switch at full throttle. The poor bugger in the gran prix was shocked because I still beat him

Still can use an AWD trans. Stronger, shorter gears better for drag racing. Need to weld the center diff and remove the VCU.

Easy

I will consult with Jeff when we start swapping. I wont be as hardcore as you were, just enough to scare off punks and maybe raise a few eyebrows. Its all about budget this time I'm afraid.

Haha. Well it's a good tidbit for you to know regardless. Throw in a nice aluminum cooler and you'll be good to go.
