Have 90 Colt 1.5 4speed with 62k did not run when I got it. Went to start it and smoke came out of ECU. It has a MD161172 in it. Found a MD160390 does anyone know if it will work? Thanks. Tried to put a picture but could not figure out how.

From 89 to 90 to 91 there were differences in the engines. 89 had 8 valves, 90 had 8 valves but a 91 style intake setup, 91 had 12 valves and I'm not sure after that. I think they had many different sensor variations. As far as the numbers go, its hard to say what you got. You would really need to know what car it came from. And 4 or 5 speed isn't going to make a difference so long as its from a manual car. Hope this helps some.

This is what I have been told that will work on a 4g15 (12 valve 1.5) engine. Mine had a MD160390 and now its running a MD161173 I have not tested the others I am just relaying what I have been told from other members! That are the same just sold in other models. Some of the are listed below. I hope it helps.

MD160391, MD147300, MD131263, MD131262, MD160390, MD161172, MD161173

You can get them from:
Sedan/hatchback mitsubishi mirage 89-92 1.5
Sedan/hatchback Eagle summit 89-92 1.5
Sedan/hatchback Dodge colt 89-92 1.5
Coupe Hyundai scoupe 91-93 1.5
Sedan/hatchback Hyundai excel 90-94 1.5
Manual/Automatic do not matter either, but I'm not sure about mixing C.A. ecu's in federal cars. I am told it wont work and I have been told it will so to date I just don't know!

89 - 92 All ECU's whether 8V or 12V will apparently work. I sold jcoberly the ECU he mentioned and that was from a 91 Colt 12V. Timing maps may differ but it was proven recently that the signals coming from and going to the distributors whether 8V or 12V are the same, and sensors are the same but may have different pin locations or hookups. It all comes down to the pinout at the ECU which I know is all the same for these cars. Whether you buy used in good condition and refurbed with new caps or buy from a place like ECUTOGO.com (ECMTOGO.com? forgot the spelling), I've gone both routes and been happy.

Oh, Jesse is right about the California and Federal ECU issue but you can simply add resistors to the board in one location and it thinks is Federal or vice versa. Check the ECU part # swappers post in the archives, because it is all detailed in their. Plus Jesse's post ECU numbers are there too.

MD161172 Mirage 6/89-11/89 1.5L SOHC C52A/C62A
MD161173 Mirage 6/89-11/89 1.5L SOHC C52A/C62A

MD131263 1989 Mirage 1.5l Federal E2T33473 A 8926
MD160390 1991-1992 Colt/Summit/Mirage 1.5l FEDERAL

These 5 ECU should work on your they are all Federal ECU's some of the others ones I posted were CALIFORNIA The same 4g15 12V ECM with different resistors soldered into a few places they can be made to work with a little work if you know a little bit about electronics or know someone that dose. I hope this clears things up.

Anat,

Let us know how it goes. All documented problems/fixes contribute to the overall pool of knowledge available to everyone here.

Also, am curious about the 4-speed in your car. EPA records show it had higher highway MPG than the 5-speed. Reading older posts here, there was a suggestion that 4-speeds actually had a taller final gearing, thus the better MPG. If this is the case, I intend to scrounge junkyards to get one when clutch time comes. Please post your results once you're up and running.

Thanks, good luck.

I HAVE A 1991 DODGE COLT HATCHBATCH IMPORT WITH A 1.5l ENGINE AND I HAVE BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH IT SHUTTING DOWN ON ME ON THE FREEWAY BUT ONCE I TURN THE KEY ON AND OFF IT WILL RUN FOR ANOTHER 4 OR 5 MILES AND THEN IT STARTED BLOWING OUT BLACK SMOKE AND SUCKING DOWN ALL THE FUEL. REPLACED THE DISTRIBUTER AND THE TPS NOW IT BRINGS UP CODES 14 AND 15 BEFORE I WASN'T GETTING POWER TO THOSE SENSORS AND NOW I AM THIS IS WHEN IT STARTED BLOWING THE BLACK SMOKE. DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE ECU? THE NUMBER OF THE ECU IS MD160390. iS THERE ANY OTHER ECU THAT I CAN USE LIKE THE CALIFORNIA WITH THE 1 ON THE END. AND IF I HAVE TO SOLDER ON SENSORS IS THERE ANYONE OUT THERE THAT CAN EXPLAIN HOW TO DO THIS TO ME? IF THIS PROBLEM IS NOT DUE TO THE COMPUTER THEN IS THERE ANYONE THAT CAN LET ME KNOW WHAT WOULD CAUSE THIS TO HAPPEN.

Checked number 1 injector with noid lite and have no lite. Talked to ECMtogo and he said to send ecm back. The test car had been down and they may have overlooked something.

I've been having the pleasure to deal with chris.

order ECU 160390 on 5/23, arrives on 5/29.

install it and car wont start. keep giving code for motor position sensor. swap sensor with another, same deal. find manuals online and test both sensors and harness. Everything tests in spec. even apply 6V to ISC motor on both and everything is in spec. Spare ECU with bad injector signal starts and runs car, no codes.

6/2 call and talk to chris and explain situation. no problem send it back and when we get it we will send out a new one. I'm like can't you send out a new one out today since i've been wasting my time on this one. chris "sure no problem"

6/6 call and get chris. ask him where is my new ecu. "oh we got that one back and it test fine in our car" WHAT? "i can ship you out another on Monday" WTF.

today 6/13 call and get chris and ask for a refund on my credit card since
I still haven't got an ECU. he apologizes and says that should of been shipped. also tells me the first ECU is bad. WHAT?

like a sucker i'm letting him ship it out 2 day. because i do need a working ecu. i'll report back.
