Well, Did a headgasket on my 12v 1.5 yesterday. Its leaking oil from the headgasket now. After I pulled the head off yeserday I noticed only one dowel on the block and there was not one on the head so I didnt think anything of it.

After trying to get it to start ( bad distrubuter) it looks like its pushing oil out of the head. And low and behold after I move the car from where the work was done I find a dowel sitting on the ground. Would the dowel missing from the one side cause the oil leak? I dont mind doing it again, But I want to kno wwhat your thoughts are on it.

Lol, ok jellyfish. ;)

No, the dowel wouldnt CAUSE the leak. If your head gasket wasnt aligned right due to the lack of the dowel, then it could be leaking due to that. You CAN install a headgasket without the dowels and be perfect, it's just harder.

I'd pull it the head off and redo it. You could probably reuse the headgasket and possibly the headbolts (if you know about TTY bolts being reused).

When I did my first HG I got the dowell stuck in the head, doh. Took about 2 hours to finally extract it and put it back in the block to line up the hg with. It is a big pain, but a necessary evil. The oil passage that leads up through the block to lubricate the camshaft is right next to it, and ironically that's where it was leaking oil. Good luck.

Check that your block and head are flat.
