so I put my freshly rebuilt 4g15 in this weekend and finnally got it to stumble to life today and spent all day trying to figure out why it would not run properly. it needs full timing advance to sorda run. we checked the cam timing atleast a dozen times today not believing it was set corrrectly and it is yet I still need full distributer advance and still only get 5degres AFTER TDC
at 800rpm. its suppose to be 10degres BEFORE TDC.

anyway the motor is stock(commuter car), stock bore(only needed a honing), everything is stock. the only thing is the car is a '92, and the engine I got came from an '89 eagle somthing. there both fuel injected 12valve motors. only thing we could think of is if the cam is any different in '89 from the '92 cam.

tommorow after work i'll probally peel the '89 cam out and stick the '92 cam in and if that dosn't work(it should I hope) I will advance the cam by 1 tooth and hope it dosn't cause valve bendage *fingers crossed*

any thoughts?

Peculiar.

My '89 is an 8v, not 12v.

Perhaps you could move the distributor back one tooth?

cant move the dizy back one tooth, it goes on the end of the cam and its slotted, the part on the dizy that goes into the slot only goes in one way.

it is kinda strange to me.

and canada seems to get different stuff, I have found the injected 12valve 4g15's in as early as '88 vehicles.

Here in the US all ive seen in 89 was 8 valve. Compare the timing marks on your cam gears.
The 8 valve uses a cast gear, while the 12 valve uses a stamped steel gear.

18* Hmm. Thats one crank tooth. First did you set your timing by the crank mark on the timing cover, or the mark on the block under the cover? There could be a discrepancy. Could also be timing differences in the cams.
Heres a long shot:
I cant remember for sure so if anyone knows positively, jump in. Are our crank pulleys two piece with a thin rubber sleeve? Like a harmonic balancer? Anyway, on my old 66 Mercury the outer hub of the harmonic balancer spun causing the timing marks to misalign.

problem solved. when I rebuilt the distributer I used the wrong shaft and the part that goes into the end of the cam had the pin hole drilled in a different location.

solution, put the dizzy I had on the old engine back on and it ran fine.

only thing I have to do now is set the timing properly. I just have no clue what it is im suppose to unplug and ground to set the timing.

There is a plug on the harness at the back of the engine bay that normally has a blank inserted into it to protect it from dust. It has a tag on it that says something like "Timing Adj.". Ground that wire.

It can be tucked behind the harness so its hard to find. It only has 1 wire, so that'll help. Mine didnt have a tag. You just ground that plug.
