The cam gear loosened off today and broke off the dowel din on the cam. So what I am asking is this an interfience engine and will I need to replace the valves? |

Yes it is an interference engine, you will have to pull off the head and check the extent of the damage. |

That is what I expected. |

Sorry to hear that Hopefully, there aren't any chunks of valve and pretty indentations in pistons. Wishing you luck! |

Well My plan is to sell the car cause I have an 89 turbo. The money from the colt is going to pay for my 4g63 build up. |

i found out the hard way too. timing belt stripped off some teeth going around the crank and did some damage saturday. i was only doing 25 and i dont know how bad it is yet but its not sounding too healthy with the new belt... good luck mj |

You wont believe it but the valves were not bent. I got the car cause the valves were bent when it through its timming belt . I guess the first valves mashed holes in the pistons to clear the second set of valves. |

Mitsu effed up on the design of this motor. They should have made gaps in the piston design in order to clear the valves. I know your problem wasnt a common one, but with the t belt normally letting go at around 60k, it would have been nice to know you wouldnt be replacing a head along with the t belt. |

the reason mitsu designed as an interferance engine has something to do with the stroke so it doesn't have take up more space and i'm sure MANY more technical aspects on it. the engine is solid so don't go bashing mitsu on a poorly designed engine. and plus, aren't timing belts supposed to be changed every 50,000 miles? at least that's what i'm doing with my 4g15... |

interferance engines are typically more efficient and compact that non -interferance engines most interference engines run with about 15% less power per litre like the ford 2.0's and the toyota engines(with the exception of the mr2 engine cause its got boost). |
