As far as i know it is, but i'll check at work tomorrow. Or, just count the number of teeth and divide that number into 360. That'll give you how many degrees each tooth is.
When you retard the cam, the ignition timing will be off. Turning the distributor(on 12 valve at least)as far as it would go wasnt enough. Just mark which ends of the slots are against the adjustment bolts. You need to to lengthen the slots that permit adjustment. I used a dremel with a metal cutting burr. 1/4" should be enough.

I had enough adjustment left in the dissy, as I only did 5 degree retard on the cam gear.

I was looking at the 8valve cam gear and its a cast piece, not stamped steel like ours.
Guys, sorry when starting this again, but can a 12V stamped steel cam gear be modified the same way as the 8V? Or does this only work on 8V? If so, can a 8V cam gear mechanically fitted to a 12V head?

You should read over this thread again, its all there. Me and Socrateez both have 12v heads with steel pulleys. People with the 8v probably have cast ones, thus may not be as easy to modify.

My car is still going fine with 5 degree retard. Its been the best mod I've done so far, especially as it was free.

Thanks! I must have missed it somehow. So 12V gears are easier to modifiy, that's cool!

I would think that the 12 valve cam gear would interchange. Don't know for sure. The cast gear my be more difficult to drill. I'll look at work tomorrow and post again.
On another note... I think my belt slipped the other day coming home. Just cruising and i start pinging like crazy. No warning. I get home and turn the dist. back about 6* or so and ping dissapears. Didnt have time to check timing but yesterday i did and its sitting at 9*. which is where it was before i turned it back! So i think my belt slipped or a pully spun. Gonna find out for sure this weekend. Feel free to correct me if i'm wrong but everything turns clockwies and if the crank or cam pulley slipped a tooth, then wouldnt that be the same as retarding the cam? Which would mean my ignition timing would be retarded too. But it was advanced. So, if something slipped, then it slipped backwards?

I understand a slipped tooth will retard timing&cam by 9*. But it's a mystery to me how it could advance itself again?! :o At the moment, I'm thinking about what could make the cambelt slip a tooth in advance. Did you screw on the dissy strong enough after readjusting it?

BTW, does anybody know how this mod will affect emissions?

Don't know, I have my emissions test on Thursday. Hopefully my carb will not let me down, it's a bit old.

Wierd isnt it. I suppose if the motor suddenly halted or misfired forcing the engine to turn in reverse for a split sec. I experienced no misfire tho. I'll find out this weekend what happened.

Hate to bring up an old thread like this, but I'm looking for the pics of the modified cam gear. It looks like the links are long defunct. Does anyone have them sitting around on a computer somewhere? Thanks!
