I have had a 1986 Turbo Mirage sitting that has been in my garage for years now as I believe it needs a new MAF sensor which has proven almost impossible to find.

When I unplug the round MAF sensor the car seems to run smoother and is almost drivable. When plugged in it will hardly idle. I have tried cleaning it as there was a fair amount of oil in it (I think this was from when I used to rally cross the car and it would bounce around a lot and suck it up via the breather tube.

Are there proven swap options or replacements?

Could the MAF be fine and unplugging the MAF is masking the issue by putting the car in limp mode?

The car surges revs up at idle and bucks when driving it. Maybe it could be the TPS?

Any help would be appreciated as its a shame to see the car still sitting after all these years.

Thanks!

Here are the known replacements per Rock Auto. Seems they are Mitsu specific.

MITSUBISHI CORDIA 1983-1986
MITSUBISHI GALANT 1985
MITSUBISHI MIRAGE 1985-1986
MITSUBISHI TREDIA 1984-1986

Mitsubishi maf sensors cannot be cleaned with brake cleaner or any chemical, as it will strip the membrane from the sensing elements, and this will skew the output.
