ok, i am still stuck. but first a little recap. when i got the car all put back together after not running for over 15 years it started right up, however it smoked more than tommy chong and willy nelson on a bus. so after checking the compresion and finding that it was perfect, i decided it must be he valve seals. so i removed the head changed them out. when doing so i cleand it up, then i bolted it all back up like i already did befor, only now, it will not run. it starts right up, but has no power, has no rev. it only gets up to about 900 rpm. so after checking everything, and then doing it again, i even replaced the spark plugs, wires, and even the coil. i checked for fuel, its good, timeing, good. so i came up with a thought. when all that oil was dumping it ran right into the exhaust, and into the cat. so i was thinking it could be cloged. would that creat my problem? i pulled it off and ran a blower through it and very little air came out. so as a temp fix to see if that was it i banged the crap out of it till some air passed. still very little i hooked it back up and almost no change. it seemed like it tried to run at first but not more that 2-3 sec. so now i want to cut the cat off just below the o2 housing and try to start it. if it runs i will replace the whole exhaust, if not, i am going to set it on fire,(jk). so what do you guys think? can i start it without any exhaust at all? can/ will it hurt anything? do you think i am on the right track. thanks every one so much, and sorry this is so long.

It sure will start without an exhaust. Most engines will run without even an exhaust manifold. They don't like it but they will run.

Make sure you get out your digital camera and record the sound coming out of that baby. Rev it a couple of times for good measure.

that was way cool. ok it works. all that because of a cloged exhaust. so i will be replacing it. i am going to start out by making my o2 housing into a 2.5 in down pipe. unless i can get my hands on a flang. is it a standerd 3 hole flang? if so i will get one, and a o2 bung and just make a full new down pipe. any way i picked up a nice mig welder, and i will be starting on the exhaust next weekend. thanks again every one for all your help. as soon as i get some pics taken i will post some new ones. its been a long time.

my o2 housing is ok, its just that its cast and the cat is welded right to it, so there is not much there for me to weld a new down pipe to. i will figure something out i am sure. my welding skills are coming around again. its like riding a bike you never really forget how just need a little practice. any way i will be running a 2.5 in down pipe and full 2.5 in cat back exhaust. not sure what muffler to get yet, something cheap, but loud. not looking to sound like a farting honda driving down the road, but i want to hear it so a strate through muffler is a must. any ideas

Even if you put a big can on the back there is no way you will ever sound like a Honda rattling down the road lol

just weld strait to the o2 housing the factory did right
just heat it up before you weld it cast steel needs (well should be) to be preheated
you dont have to heat it but its the proper way

and my b on thinking you were off on the timing belt i hope you can forgive me :D
