Hello group!

Have been monitoring and learning neat stuff. Since my last post, The car (86 turbo)is running good. Rebuilt turbo, cleaned up catalytic and also rebuilt the trans. Nothing really wrong with the internals of the tranny, but replaced synchros and diff bearings since its apart. Replaced the select switch and found 5th gear again no problem.

Still have a unique problem which only happens when going uphill, under load (3k rpm)
on 3rd or 4th gear. It jumps out of gear (shifter does not move). I release gas and it goes
back to gear. Took tranny apart again and nothing internally wrong!

Any suggestions/advice?

Thank you again!

I hate to say it but "Sounds like synchros", just because a part is new does not mean it is working...

Thanks for the reply. Synchros are supposed to make shifting easier and smoother. If it is synchros, why is it only happening when the car is going uphill? It happens when Im on the
gas and not shifting. On a flat/downhill, the car will rev freely until I shift.

Any other theories out there?
Thanks!

Probably a worthless idea but in my jeep when I put a load on it and the drivetrain torqued it would pop out of gear then when I let off it would usually pop itself back in. After some head scratching I discovered that the shift arm was hitting the hole in the body causing it so push it forward a little. So, maybe somethings catching your shift linkage while under heavy load. I don't know much about tranny's, car or human form, but as far as I know synchros are just for matching the gears between shifts. Most semi truck tranny's don't have them and a lot of old European car's don't have them and they don't slip under load... Sorry for the long post but liquor helps me not shut up :drinkers:

Thats a good theory John!! Let me check that.

I changed the motor/trans mounts so to minimize movement
from worn mounts.

Thanks!

Any more ideas out there?

Hello to all!

Been busy with other stuff but still working on the mirage...
Car still doing it... will a bad back-up light switch have something to do with this? (when connected the backup light stays on all the time)
This switch not available from dealer... anything similar or that will work?

Thank you!

You should be able to test the backup switch on a bench with an Ohm meter and by pressing in the ball. If that doesn't work then try a backup switch from a 4 cylinder 5 speed Mitsu will most certainly work. Hit up the wrecker with your broken switch and compare them 8-[ .

Now if your switch works fine when you test it then there's most certainly something not all right will your 5 speed and I'm not experience enough with those to help you out more.

Good luck.
